[Podcast] The Boo Crew Gets Haunted by Tobias Forge from GHOST!
On Episode 74, The Boo Crew is joined by special guest co-host Spider One from Powerman 5000 and the Cardinal himself, Tobias Forge, of the rock band GHOST! Sitting down with the ‘Crew, Tobias discusses the horror movies that influence him, the music that entrances him and the world building of the group.
On the topic of horror movies he loves and that inspired the aesthetics for GHOST, Tobias shared, “If we want to go into horror films that inspired me and meant a lot to me…it’s everything from films that I hold a very high regard, that I find to be well crafted good cinematic films like The Shining, Alien, Silence of the Lambs, Jaws..like real films. To films that are less, I wouldn’t say not good but that are more entertaining that have other qualities than being high horse cinema. Having spent a lot of time seeing them, many of these films have one way or another inspired me to do what I do. But that might be musically or just the air around them. I mean I know a ton of films I cannot say that they are good but I like them. I like the feeling of them.”
“I definitely think that it’s important for the sake of argument to say draw a few lines in the sand saying like these are real films – like the ones I said, The Exorcist, The Omen, The Shining – made by directors and then you have countless slasher movies and the third or fourth version of the Italian classics that are just laughable. But then you have like Lucio Fulci’s originals. They are fantastic, but I wouldn’t put them next to Jaws. They are just two different things. But again, it’s also a genre that is sort of fueled by a nerdery that I guess drama does not have or other film genres. I think that most of us can sort of agree that film X or Y, we love them even if it’s not good. They bring so much else to the table.”
Tobias also recalls discovering new music before the age of the internet. “As extreme metal came in that was a big black unknown. I would find a record like Blasphemy – The Fallen Angel of Doom – There was no info on that band ever. You could only look at the front cover. You had the devil shooting an arrow at the sky. You turn it around and you had one guy, he looked like he was about to kill someone. They looked like they were going to meet and kill each other. That alone attracted me and sucked me into it. And then you put the music on and you have black metal noise. I sat with the question marks for years over that record. Now you can find anything. If you google Blasphemy, you can find anything.”
