Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew are joined by special guest host Spencer Charnas of the band Ice Nine Kills as we chat with the legendary actor, producer, writer, director and wrestler – David Arquette!

Arquette is best known in the genre as Deputy Dewey from Wes Craven’s hit SCREAM franchise. He not only paid his dues and entertained us in front of the camera, he’s also spent time behind the lens directing, writing and producing. He’s now got TWO new incredibly fun films out this month – Spree by director Eugene Kotlyarenko and a fantastic documentary about his wrestling career titled You Cannot Kill David Arquette.

Sitting down with the ‘Crew, Arquette fondly remembers his time on set with the icon, Wes Craven.

“I learned so much from Wes. He was such an incredible mentor and just… friend. He was an amazing director to work with. One of my most memorable moments was – they used to hand out these tickets to films that weren’t done yet, that you can go and see them early and then you can comment on what you liked and what you didn’t. And they used to pass them out on Melrose Ave. We’d go hang out at this newsstand on Melrose and they were handing out this free movie pass and I was like “Hey, let me see”. I looked at it and read the description and essentially it was SCREAM and I had just filmed it. So I was like “Sure I’ll go”. So I went and they saw me and said, “You can’t be here! Come with us to the back”. I got to sit next to Wes while we watched a preview audience watch his film. It was super cool cause he would just be sitting there, knowing the scare is going to come. As soon as the people would freak out, he’d get such a kick out of it!”

The SCREAM franchise has horror fans excited as it is going to be returning to theaters in 2021 with Radio Silence at the helm directing and producing the next installment. Confirmed to the franchise’s return is Arquette reprising his role as Dewey Riley as well as Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers. Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella were the geniuses who brought us the awesome Ready Or Not in 2019 starring Samara Weaving, Adam Brody and Andie MacDowell.

“They are super talented filmmakers. You can just tell the way they tell a story is very detailed, very thought out, and very intricate. I think they are going to do an incredible job. You know, it’s going to be hard, but they all grew up being fans of this. This is something that inspired them and I’ve learned the older I get, it really comes from a place of love. You have to do things that you love. It’s when things that come together have the most sort of effect or they turn out the best or the ones that you enjoy watching the most. Because you’re a fan of the genre and these guys are – they are really going to do a great job, I just know it.”

Arquette’s latest release Spree, available now on all major VOD streaming platforms, is one wild ride into the world of the darker side of social media.

“Spree is just an incredible approach at a horror film that I hadn’t seen before. It’s shot all on iPhones and GoPros and it’s got this social media element – @Kurtsworld96 on Instagram; you could sort of follow the character and see all the sort of backstory that they’re building toward this event.” David adds, “Eugene Kotlyarenko, is an incredible director. He just put this world together. It’s funny I was listening to him talk about the movie and he was talking about Taxi Driver. You know, it also takes place in a car. He said “If you watch Taxi Driver with an audience, you’ll be surprised at how many laughs there are at the beginning until he shaves his head. You can see whoa this is going to a really dark place.” So it’s a very similar approach in this. We’re portraying these fun characters that are cringey and kind of like a little sad but funny because they are so lost in the way they don’t understand the world that they’re in. There’s a lot of humor in that regard, then it takes this really twisted turn.”

Going from a reflection on real life to an all out documentary, Arquette’s got another film out with perhaps just as much blood. Except it’s his own. You Cannot Kill David Arquette chronicles his return to wrestling after infamously becoming WCW’s World Heavyweight Champion on April 25, 2000 during the promotion of his film Ready To Rumble.

“I wanted to prove myself. I don’t know. I was so sick of people saying….You know I learned something through it. There’s a lot of tall guys and a lot of muscular guys in wrestling but you have to be tough and you have to be crazy to a certain extent. And I was like “I’ve got tough and crazy! I could be tougher and crazier than most any of you!” That was my in. You just have to pay your dues… and it’s a lot, traveling city to city and then wrestling different people. Different people have different things going on in their lives as they’re getting into the ring with you. You never kinda know what’s going to happen. There were a lot of moments of real sorts of insanity.”

SPREE is available now on VOD and digital, and You Cannot Kill David Arquette is currently playing at select drive-in theaters and comes to VOD and digital August 28th.
