Quantum and Woody Must Die! #1 kind of says it all right there, doesn’t it? Foils to heroes, even dubious ones like these, always rant on and on like that. Thank the comic book gods once again for books like this. Q&W+Goat shows us that not every hero story has to be so noble or so epic or so dark and serious that the ‘world will never be the same’.

These two would-be-heroes are the definition of bumbling do-gooders. Brothers Eric (aka Quantum) and Woody (aka the degenerate) seem to be getting into shenanigans all over town. Good luck keeps following them wherever they go, too. Knocking French-Canadians notwithstanding, writer James Asmus continues his comical run with these characters. Plus, you can never go wrong with more Goat and a dash of hypnotism. I honestly don’t know why I never picked this dynamically hilarious series up before their last miniseries, The Delinquents. As long as writers like Asmus keep it this fun, I’ll follow their antics anywhere.
The art by Steve Lieber adds to the fast pace of the story as well. It’s no surprise to anyone who appreciated the underrated Superior Foes of Spider-Man series that Lieber can draw the heck out of funny. Shattering the Santa myth to a child is a particularly fun sequence in this chapter.
I must commend letterer Dave Lanphear. The irreverent emoticons in the word balloons absolutely fit how oddball these two and the wacky world they inhabit are. It’s nice to see there’s new ways to swear in comics without actually swearing in comics. Also the placement of sound effects is pitch-perfect throughout this issue too. Huzzah and kudos all around for making this a great introduction issue. Bring on the offspring of the Goat! Pick this up and learn to laugh at superheroes again and not ironically but because they’re so stupidly funny.
