[Comic Review] “Neverboy” #3 Is Clever And Unpredictable

Published

on

Reviewed By Jorge Solis. An exciting sci-fi thriller with interesting protagonists, “Neverboy” #3 delivers a surreal tale that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. How far will someone go in order to satisfy their desires and find inspiration? The “Neverboy” series continues to explore its clever premise and punch out with the plot twists.

WRITTEN BY: Shaun Simon

ART BY: Tyler Jenkins

PUBLISHER: Dark Horse Comics

PRICE: $3.99

RELEASE: May 6, 2015

Once at the top of his game in the art word, Julian Drag wants to claim that title once again. Neverboy just wants to things to remain the same and get back with his family. But in order for the imaginary friend to stay real, Julian needs to find the drugs that keep him alive. In return for feeding him, Julian finds the strength to draw again and stay relevant to his craft.

Writer Shaun Simon creates two sympathetic protagonists, who are struggling with their own drug addictions. Neverboy has to physically drown himself with the pills and medications to keep his own version of reality going. Julian loved the praise and wealth that came with being a celebrated artist and wants to relive that “high” again. With the need to binge again, at what cost will these two characters go to feed their urges?

In the opening pages, artist Tyler Jenkins reinforces the family themes, especially when Neverboy notices a mother with her daughter. For Julian, Jenkins captures an eye-popping painting that harkens back to abstract art and Andy Warholism. In a wide shot, notice how Neverboy sits on the floor, with the floor littered with different-colored pills. Colorist Kelly Fitzpatrick heightens the trippy atmosphere with vivid blue and green tones.

“Neverboy” #3 pushes its main characters to their breaking point. I’m really looking forward to what happens next.

IDW Dark and Paramount recently joined forces to launch limited comic book tales set in the worlds of Smile and A Quiet Place, and we’ve learned today that they’ll continue hanging around in those franchise universes with two brand new limited series tales.

Entertainment Weekly has exclusively revealed this afternoon that IDW Dark’s Any Given Smile debuts in September, while A Quiet Place: Rising Tides arrives in November.

First up, from writer Stephanie Williams and artist Pablo CollarAny Given Smile puts a football-themed twist on Parker Finn’s successful Smile movie franchise.

The five-part limited series is “set in January 1995, during the American Arena League football championship game in St. Augustine, Florida. The rising superstar of the Sharks, backup quarterback Dupree, is feeling the pressure from his teammates, the fans, and also the city’s gambling underworld, to whom he owes a considerable debt. Meanwhile, a sports journalist investigates a string of suicides that may be connected to the big game. At the very least, they are connected to a sinister entity that preys on the minds of its victims.”

From writer Declan Shalvey and artist Luke SparrowA Quiet Place: Rising Tides will also be a five-issue limited story. The comic book tale “brings the creatures to the Florida Keys, where a father-daughter duo attempt to survive on water in a houseboat.”

EW further details, “This tense family reunion coincides with the arrival of the vicious creatures that hunt through sound. Grace and her dad find safety on the open ocean, but she’ll have to make landfall sooner or later; the father’s oxygen tank and their supplies are running low, while a hurricane swiftly approaches.”
