[5 Skull Review] “Ghost Fleet” #7 Is Crazy, Perfect, Balls Out Fun

Published

on

“Ghost Fleet” #7 is some of the craziest shit I have ever seen in a comic. The very definition of balls to the walls action, this is what action movies would have looked like in the 80’s if they had access to modern day special effects. It’s a gorgeous unholy combination that could only be crafted in the fiery pits of hell. While it’s not perfect any grievances soon fall to the wayside as the pureness of the fun wins out above all.

Let’s address the elephant in the room, Ghost Fleet is coming to an end all too soon. You can feel how rushed all of the plot points are, these were made to be spaced out over at least a handful of issues. Twists and turns assault you at a break neck pace. There are numerous moments that really could’ve benefited from some breathing room. Not to say the issue is a jumbled mess, it’s definitely not. Everything makes sense it just that there’s little to no breathing room between revelations. While I would’ve loved to see Ghost Fleet’s narrative given the time is truly deserves having it cut short creates something special in its own right. It makes for an insanely high-octane read that you rarely see, it’s essentially a 5 issue arc jammed into a tight but thrilling 22 pages. What’s amazing is how this feels like the logical conclusion/culmination of what Ghost Fleet is all about. Strong characters going fast and hard, naturally the climax would be them going faster and harder than ever before.

‘Grandiose’ perfectly encapsulated the feel of Ghost Fleet #7; grand in an impressive way. I could see people calling it mindless, but it’s not, all of these revelations have been set up. Look back to the first couple issues and you’ll find all kinds of hints and tips of what was coming. I’d say that I’d be sad to see this series go but it’s hard to be sad when you’re having this much fun. This penultimate chapter has all the dials kicked up to 11 so I cannot even begin to fathom what the finale will be like, aside from radical.

‘Exhuma’ Prequel Spinoff Webtoon ‘Maengjong’ Debuts This Weekend

Hwarim and Bonggil (Kim Go-eun and Lee Do-hyun) in Exhuma

The supernatural world of Korean folk horror movie Exhuma grows larger with the arrival of prequel spinoff webtoon Maengjong this weekend, Variety reports today.

Naver Webtoon debuts Maengjong on May 30.

The series hails from Haemuri (Olgami) and will trace the high school origins of how shaman duo Hwarim and Bonggil, played by Kim Go-eun and Lee Do-hyun in the 2024 film, came together to face occultish threats.

The story is set to begin when “Hwarim, who has been concealing her identity following a childhood encounter with a snake spirit called Jin, crosses paths with Bonggil at their school.”

Variety notes that Exhuma director Jang Jae-hyun participated in the project’s early concept stage.

“We are presenting ‘Maengjong,’ a new series capturing the appeal of the horror-occult genre, ahead of the full summer season,” said Lee Jeong-geun, Naver Webtoon’s Korea webtoon content leader. “With the high school story of Hwarim and Bonggil, who left a strong impression in the film ‘Exhuma,’ enhanced by Haemuri’s characteristic tense direction, we expect it will be a welcome work for genre fans.”

“It is meaningful that the spin-off story of ‘Exhuma,’ loved by many audiences, expands by meeting the new grammar of webtoon,” said Lee Hyeon-jeong, managing director of the film business division at Showbox, which distributed the film. “We hope it will be a fresh experience for both film fans and webtoon readers.”

Exhuma was a breakout hit in 2024, becoming the first Korean occult film to surpass 10 million ticket buyers and the country’s highest-grossing film of the year. I wrote in my review that “the intricately woven Exhuma delivers one of the year’s biggest surprises in horror so far.”

The bond between Hwarim and Bonggil was one of the film’s highlights, making this prequel webtoon a must for fans.
