Every time a new licensed horror game gets announced, a sizable chunk of the horror community emits a collective groan when it’s revealed that upcoming the title will be an asymmetrical multiplayer experience. While I actually enjoy the virtual hide-and-seek thrills of titles like Dead by Daylight and Gun Interactive’s Texas Chain Saw Massacre, I can still understand the frustration. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that even our asymmetrical multiplayer frights came bundled with fully-fledged single player modes.

In fact, one can even argue that the licensed asymmetrical horror experience itself was invented by a franchise that was just as well known for its campaign as its legendary multiplayer mode. Naturally, I’m referring to the Aliens vs. Predator games, a series that has been mostly forgotten despite its tremendous influence on gaming as a whole. And with Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus showing plenty of love for the franchise’s long history of terrific video games, today I’d like to look back on a criminally underappreciated part of Alien history: the Xenomorph campaign in 2010’s lovable hot mess, Aliens vs. Predator.

Based on series of licensed comics published by Dark Horse in 1989, AvP would take the world by storm with an insanely successful expansion into toys, books and video games (with the film series only happening decades later). And while the initial beat ‘em up games were fun enough, it’s generally accepted that the crossover franchise only came into its own when Rebellion Developments released their phenomenal First-Person-Shooter, 1994’s Alien vs Predator.

Inspired by controversial adaptations like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre on the Atari 2600, Rebellion realized that playing as the monster could be even more fun than simply running away from them, which is why they made sure that players would be able to take control of humans, Predators and the Xenomorphs in their groundbreaking titles. This decision led to some of the most profitable licensed games in history, with Aliens vs Predator 2 and its expansions often being cited as one of the best FPS games of all time. Unfortunately, there would be a long hiatus after the sequel titles once Twentieth Century Fox finally decided that it was worth focusing on a theatrical version of the crossover.

This is why it would take a decade for Rebellion’s AvP to finally make a comeback, though the much-anticipated sequel would then be turned into a full-on reboot in order to better conform with the movies’ newly established lore. Unfortunately, executives split between this project and the ill-fated Colonial Marines (as well as some rumored studio interference) made development of the 2010 title a complicated process, which is why it came as no surprise that the finished title was so negatively received when compared to its groundbreaking predecessors.

While critics at the time were correct in lambasting the game’s short campaign length and plethora of technical issues, it’s much easier to look back on the game today as a flawed yet commendable throwback to a bygone era of gaming – especially since the idea of a commercial release containing three completely different playstyles (four if you count the multiplayer) would likely seem ludicrous to modern consumers.

Despite middling reviews, even the harshest critics from the time had to admit that the regrettably brief thrills of the Alien campaign made up some of the most unique and entertaining segments of the game. And now that you can purchase AvP online for next to nothing, I’d argue that the title is worth buying simply to play this gory third of the experience. For starters, this portion of the campaign borrows most of what made the previous Xenomorph modes so much fun, allowing players to zoom across floors, walls and ceilings with little regard for gravity as “Number 6” stalks its prey from the shadows – armed only with teeth, claws and a razor-sharp tail.

And while it’s true that the 2010 game removed some features from the original games in order to focus on visual fidelity (like playing as a Face-Hugger and having alternate vision modes), Rebellion mostly made up for this by placing the lead Xeno in a series of unique story-driven situations paying homage to the films rather than making every level a variation of the same old colonial marine buffet. You even receive telepathic commands from the Queen as you play, which gives the story missions some much-needed context.

Personally, I love the idea of a mistreated Xenomorph escaping from Weyland-Yutani and wreaking havoc among his captors, with the initial break-out reminding me a lot of the fugitive Xenos from Alien Resurrection. It’s also really cool how the story accompanies you from Chest-Burster to Praetorian to Queen as this monstrous underdog embarks on an epic quest to keep its kind going, even slaying a Predator along the way. And since these are standalone campaigns, you don’t even have to play through the terrible Colonial Marines story in order to understand what’s going on.

By having you systematically destroy lights and turrets while hunting down your foes in the dark as you search for a brainy snack, the Alien campaign actually reminds me of that common internet meme where fans point out how Predators act more like hunters while Aliens are the true predators (though both creatures are technically aliens).

Obviously, the experience here isn’t perfect, with the Alien’s extreme agility even causing motion-sickness in certain players (Number 6 is clearly tapping into the Speed-Force as it crawls through ventilation shafts like a bat out of hell), and that’s not even mentioning the janky animations that often lock you into an action while you’re still getting shot at. However, in the grand scheme of things, I’d argue that most of these shortcomings can be overlooked simply because the game around them is so much fun – especially for Alien fans. Hell, I can even forgive the repetitive execution animations since eating your enemies’ heads remains an inexhaustible source of thrills.

Honestly, my biggest gripe with the experience is how short it is, as I’d pay for a AAA Alien game based solely on this third of the AvP experience. A hypothetical successor could even expand on the idea of helping your fellow Face-Huggers out as they search for suitable hosts, with those future chest-bursters then serving as your replacements if you die.

I’ve heard it said that putting players in the shoes of a living embodiment of cosmic horror completely misses the point of the Alien films, and while I agree that this approach wouldn’t make for a particularly scary experience, I think the power fantasy might just make you appreciate the brutality behind these monsters that much more when you encounter them from the victims’ perspective. It’s just a shame that the Xenos end up being treated like canon fodder throughout the rest of AvP (which has honestly been an issue ever since James Cameron showed us how cool it looked when Aliens got shot up with pulse rifles).

Regardless, now that an Aliens vs Predator revival has become a very real possibility (with Fede Alvarez even suggesting that he team up with Prey director Dan Trachtenberg in order to develop the project), why not bring back the long-time tradition of tie-in video games with a next-gen Aliens vs Predator game? After all, I can’t be the only one wanting to dive back into the biomechanical shoes of our favorite phallic space monster.

In this edition of The Silver Lining, we’ll be discussing the Strause Brothers’ controversial sequel, Aliens vs Predator: Requiem.

Despite fans clamoring for a live-action incarnation of the Alien vs Predator franchise, the proposed adaptation was infamously stuck in development hell for years until Paul W.S. Anderson finally brought it to the big screen back in 2004. While that film was (unfairly) lambasted by critics for being a crowd-pleasing B-movie that reduced its legendary extraterrestrials to mere intergalactic wrestlers, it still made quite the killing at the box-office.

That’s why it’s only natural that Twentieth Century Fox decided to cash in on the picture’s compelling cliff-hanger ending by almost immediately greenlighting a sequel. However, when Anderson exited the proposed rematch to work on his Death Race reboot, Fox had to look elsewhere for filmmakers willing to tackle their biggest sci-fi properties.

Wanting a director with experience in effects-driven blockbusters, the studio eventually selected the Strause Brothers to helm the project. The duo was already well-known for their special effects company Hydraulx, which had worked on everything from The X-Files to The Day After Tomorrow (they would also go on to create the surprisingly entertaining Skyline movies), but the brothers had also unsuccessfully pitched an AVP movie to Fox in the past, making them ideal candidates for a rematch.

Originally titled Alien vs. Predator: Survival of the Fittest, the sequel was set to follow the immediate aftermath of the first film, with the newly-birthed Predalien causing a Predator ship to crash-land in a small American town. Wanting to avoid a Xenomorph outbreak, the Yautja decide to send a lone Predator back to earth in order to clean up this extraterrestrial mess and exterminate the survivors with extreme prejudice.

With passionate filmmakers hell-bent on bringing both franchises back to their horrific roots with a hard R rating and a script that promised to finally bring the infamous Predalien to the big screen after the hybrid creature had been teased in games and comics for years, it’s easy to understand why fans were initially hyped for Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.

SO WHAT WENT WRONG?

It may not have been a financial flop, which is partially due to its drastically reduced budget, but Requiem’s critical reception was so negative that it managed to kill Fox’s plans for a third crossover despite making over $130 million at the box-office. The film currently sits at an abysmal 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the lowest ranking film in either franchise with near-unanimous bad reviews.

Pretty much every aspect of the production came under fire by critics, with the film being accused of further diluting Ridley Scott and John McTiernan’s classics while also throwing away most of what had made the first AVP enjoyable in the first place. The lower budget meant that the flick lacked the massive scale of its predecessor, with the Strause brothers being forced to deliver a more easily told story that didn’t require fancy sets and expensive production design.

This resulted in the film resembling something more akin to a cheap slasher flick rather than a sci-fi epic, featuring plenty of familiar genre tropes while hiding its shoddy production value behind dimly lit sets and shaky photography. In fact, many viewers complained that the experience was so dark that it was often hard to tell what was going on, which is never a good sign when the success of your movie hinges on watching iconic monsters battle it out.

Requiem also suffered from a series of rushed rewrites and reshoots, as well as a decent amount of studio-mandated censorship. The filmmakers were reportedly unsure of the story they wanted (or were allowed) to tell and were forced to rework several scenes after test audiences claimed that the finished movie was just too gory and depressing to be fun.

There was also quite a bit of controversy surrounding the picture’s unprecedented amount of violence, as several media outlets claimed that the sequel took its horror elements a bit too far during certain scenes involving pregnant women. These complaints may not have affected the box-office revenue, but they certain helped to hammer in the final nails in the crossover franchise’s coffin.

THE SILVER LINING

Aliens vs Predator requiem

The first AVP may have been an unfairly maligned product of its time, but it’s a lot harder to defend the low-budget thrills of Requiem. That being said, if taken out of context from the rest of the series, I honestly think that there’s still a lot to love about this mean little horror flick that isn’t afraid to push the limits of both franchises – even if it’s still the weakest entry of the bunch.

For starters, I adore how the flick follows a single Predator as one of its main characters. This lone hunter isn’t quite the protagonist of the story (though he should have been), but focusing on a morally ambiguous anti-hero definitely makes the movie more interesting. In fact, the film goes out of its way to give this creature a personality, giving him acid-disfigured mandibles and more agile mannerisms than his predecessors. The filmmakers even nicknamed him “Wolfe” as a nod to Harvey Keitel’s character from Pulp Fiction, who is also known for cleaning up other character’s bloody messes.

Requiem was also the first time that we’ve ever seen Xenomorphs running amok in human civilization, with the ravenous creatures devastating the once-quiet community of Gunnison, Colorado. The scenes where we actually get to witness the Predalien leading this extraterrestrial infestation are undeniably thrilling, featuring lots of gnarly gore and mean-spirited kills that really up the ante for both franchises. These ultra-violent moments might not be for everyone, but they allow the flick to compete with even the most brutal of slasher flicks, especially if you can get your hands on the unrated cut.

Aliens vs Predator: Requiem suffers from bad writing and several fan-film-esque moments, but if you can accept its schlocky ambitions you’ll be rewarded with a fun little genre picture that shows us Aliens and Predators at their most gruesome. I can’t quite call it a legitimately good movie, but it’s certainly one of the most entertaining alien invasion flicks out there, and it’s sure to please even the most demanding of gore-hounds.

Watching a bad movie doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad experience. Even the worst films can boast a good idea or two, and that’s why we’re trying to look on the bright side with The Silver Lining, where we shine a light on the best parts of traditionally maligned horror flicks.

NECA once again steps outside the box with their Aliens line of action figures, this time around turning three Xenomorphs from the world of arcade games into “movie deco” figures.

This particular batch of monsters is from the Aliens vs. Predator arcade game from 1994, which brought the two franchises together long before the movie ended up getting made.

NECA explains, “The unique Alien adversaries seen in the game get the movie treatment, with new deco imagining their look had they been included in the subsequent movie. The figures use the super-poseable Ultimate body, with over 30 points of articulation and bendable tail.”

Included in the mix are…

  • Arachnoid Alien
  • Chrysalis Alien
  • Razor Claws Alien

The figures stand approximately 9″ tall. They’re shipping in October 2021.

In the world of game development, it’s all too common to see studios outside the titans of the industry either get snaffled up and absorbed by said titans or fade away into obscurity, or worse, bankruptcy.

British developer Rebellion has very much bucked that trend. From humble beginnings making the rather good Aliens vs. Predator for the doomed Atari Jaguar, to its present-day, multi-faceted form that’s been reviving lost franchises, building up its own IP such as Sniper Elite, Strange Brigade, and Zombie Army, as well as owning big-name comic book titles such as 2000AD. Rebellion even has its own TV and film department now, with Moon and Warcraft director Duncan Jones adapting the 2000AD Rogue Trooper series for the big screen.

With the company’s latest game, the highly enjoyable Zombie Army 4: Dead War out on consoles and PC today, we spoke with longtime Head of Creative at Rebellion, Tim Jones about the game, 2000AD, VR, Aliens Vs. Predator, Speedball II and more.

Bloody Disgusting: With this being the first Zombie Army title to launch as a fully standalone title, has it allowed for more ambitious ideas in terms of how the game plays and looks? There does seem to be a bit more freedom from the World War II template from what I’ve seen. There’s also a bit of an 80s horror vibe to it in the most recent trailer.

Tim Jones: Certainly, we had more time with this game to work on what makes Zombie Army games tick, and double down on things that, perhaps, seem a little goofier, amp up the crazy, and really take the gloves off, so to speak. It’s been a lot of fun to make, and the response we’ve gotten so far (this was before reviews went up) seems to suggest we’re on the right track with a no-nonsense, killing Nazi zombies kind of game.

You’re right to point out the ’80s horror vibe. It’s always been a part of the game’s development, though it’s not specifically mainstream ’80s. In my mind, there’s a lot of cult horror to it, particularly Euro-horror

BD: It definitely has a bit of a Lamberto Bava’s Demons to it. A bit of Fulci…

Tim Jones: Yes definitely, Bava, Giallo films, Argento, as well as the more obvious American influences such as John Carpenter. It does run through the game from the visuals to what happens in the game itself to the audio, which has inspiration from Goblin, Fabio Frizzi, and greats like Ennio Morricone as well.

For me, it’s an aesthetic that bleeds through the entire game, right down to the way characters have a deadpan, serious reaction to all this ridiculousness around them. It’s funny, whilst being a bit scary and gross, but to the characters, this is the reality of the world they’re in, and that’s where part of the fun comes from.

BD: Were there particular types of zombies from other media that inspired the look and movement of the Zombie Army undead?

Tim Jones: The meat and potatoes have always been the zombie horde. It’s always been important to me that they were the slow, shambling zombies over faster, more aggressive zombies. When we first started making the Zombie Army games it was debated that we should use fast zombies because they’d be a greater threat to a player who already has guns, but I was like ‘no, no, they have to be slow-moving and creepy, the threat comes from getting caught unawares by sheer numbers from any direction, and they just keep on coming.

You feel comfortable when they’re at a distance, but before you know it one has crept up behind you and you’re backed into a corner, fighting your way out. I really like that ebb and flow, the way it changes up the pace of gameplay and forces the player into different ways of playing.

Plus, if they weren’t slow-moving, you wouldn’t be able to place traps and perform the X-Ray kills. You’d lack the strategy.

Of course, we do have some faster moving zombies. We’ve introduced the officers in this game, who can transform existing zombies into the faster more aggressive kind until you take out the officer by shooting its heart, stomping on his heart, taking his heart in your bare hands and squishing it, you know, just as long as you destroy the heart otherwise he’s getting back up again and again.

We’ve also added more Elites (Zombie Army‘s mini-boss style zombies) this time, including a flamethrower zombie who doesn’t care about his own troops and will just spray fire anywhere he can. We also allow players to pick up the Elite’s weapon after defeating them, so you get to have fun wielding a flamethrower and the other special weapons, which is a nice reward.

BD: Multiplayer has evolved in the time since Zombie Army Trilogy, especially in the horror game space where there’s been a shift to asymmetrical multiplayer, but you’ve clearly taken that into consideration with the new customizations and progression. Has it been difficult to try and balance the classic Zombie Army experience with something closer to the games as a service model? Did the development of Strange Brigade help in that regard?

Tim Jones: We certainly take inspiration and influence from what we’ve personally done before, and aspects of what we introduced in Strange Brigade, such as the special powers and upgrades, have made their way into the Zombie Army 4 mix. It’s something we’ve always wanted to add to Zombie Army, so it’s been great to do so this time.

In regards to Games as a Service and that kind of thing, our focus was more on creating what I suppose you could call a traditional product that a user can buy and have a lot of content from the off. Whether they’re player singleplayer or multiplayer, we’ve got a really meaty campaign in there with really lengthy levels and a narrative running through it.

We were playing a chapter of a level on a Twitch stream for almost an hour and still hadn’t finished, but we had to stop the stream by then, so there’s a lot more to it now than simple arenas that you have to grind over and over for some currency. Players have a reason to come back. They did so with Zombie Army Trilogy too, but now we have the XP and leveling systems, with things to unlock both aesthetically and in terms of skill trees, plus a plan for more downloadable content in the future, some of it paid, some of it free.

So yeah, it’s something of a middle ground, but the focus is first and foremost on delivering quality content from day one.

BD: Rebellion has been enthusiastic about making games in virtual reality, and has Sniper Elite coming to VR this year. Would there be any chance of Sniper Elite VR getting its own Zombie Army VR spinoff?

Tim Jones: I can’t tell you how much I’d love to. Certainly, nothing I could comment on at this stage because if we were doing something on it I couldn’t talk about it. It would be a perfect fit though, as the glut of horror VR games out there points towards, horror is a natural thing for VR.

It’s hard to imagine any kind of gaming environment we create that wouldn’t be cool in VR because virtual reality gets you more into the action. Even if it’s a top-down board game, that’s more immersive in VR. It’s still an emerging medium, but we continue to be excited about it and to work with it. Certainly, Sniper Elite VR is shaping up to be a success from the response we’ve got over the last few months

BD: Rebellion acquired the rights to The Bitmap Brothers games late last year. With so many classic titles there, which do you think would resonate the most in the modern market? Personally speaking, something as brutal and competitive as Speedball could be a joy to see reborn (though I have a soft spot for The Chaos Engine and Gods).

Tim Jones: Again, I can’t yet talk about exactly what our plans are with those titles. It feels like Rebellion has become something of a custodian for a lot of classic geeky culture, especially in the UK. I think we own the majority of comic IP over here.

Often we acquiring things that have been forgotten and neglected, and we’ve lovingly digitized and archived it where we can, making things available for study because so much of it is languishing in people’s attics on rotting bits of paper or tucked away in museums. We just love doing it because of the heritage and the culture of it was inspiring to a lot of us growing up and we want to make sure it’s not forgotten and gets taken care of, whilst continuing to create cutting edge stuff with the likes of Judge Dredd and 2000AD. Even in games we acquired the license to Battlezone from Atari and remade it as this big new VR title.

The opportunity with the Bitmap Brothers came up and again as so many of us grew up with those games, it’s exciting to have those in-house now and be able to do something with them and make sure they’re not forgotten.

Going back to your original question, in terms of which of those Bitmap Brothers games I’d like to see going forward, I’m of the same view as everyone else seems to be when it gets mentioned, including yourself, is Speedball II and The Chaos Engine. Those are the first ones that seem to spring to mind. I would have no qualms spending development time on those two if the opportunity comes up. You could certainly see something like Speedball II finding a place in the current market.

BD: Yeah, with over the to sports games like Rocket League doing well, you could definitely do well with something as aggressive and over the top as Speedball.

Tim Jones: Absolutely, I can’t think of too many games out there like it. Goofy futuristic sports, sounds awesome, right? It could have been made now.

BD: Talking of acquisitions, Rebellion has been in charge of the famous 2000AD comic series for 20 years now, and we’ve seen that it has branched out into film and TV productions of the license with Duncan Jones working on Rogue Trooper for instance. Is there a plan to make new games using 2000AD’s big hitters again? If I recall correctly, there’s not been a game from that since 2011’s Judge Dredd vs Zombies on mobile devices

Tim Jones: We are always open to all possibilities, and always looking for things to do with what we have, but it has to be the right fit. We don’t want to be making things just for the sake of it, to do a cash cow franchise. It has to have a reason for being. But yeah, as you pointed out, with everything else we are doing in games, comics, movies, TV and the rest, some things get left behind. But there are some things bubbling under that you’ll see sooner or later. There’s a lot of IP in 2000AD that are perfect for games. So yeah, watch this space, that’s about as revealing as I can get I’m afraid.

BD: It’s been ten years since Rebellion got to make an Aliens Vs. Predator game. Do you wish you could have another crack at that series?

Tim Jones: It’s funny, I’ve been thinking about that myself. I started at Rebellion working on the first PC Aliens Vs. Predator which came out in 1999. Then a decade later I was heading up AvP 2010, and it’s now ten years after that, time flies, and it’s such a shame we’re not doing another one right now because I’d love to. It still feels, to a lot of us, like a part of the heritage and DNA of Rebellion.

The right opportunity hasn’t come up, unfortunately, but we would love to if it became possible to do that again, as we love the franchise. Certainly, for me, I feel like the world needs another AvP FPS game, and I’d love to help create it, but yeah sadly, 2020 isn’t gonna see another Rebellion AvP game. There’s your world exclusive! Rather anticlimactic I’m afraid, but the passion to do it is there, rest assured.

Zombie Army 4 is out now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Sniper Elite VR is out on PSVR and PV VR systems later this year.

Developed by Rebellion, first-person shooter Aliens vs. Predator was released for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 back in 2010, and we’ve just learned this week that it’s now been made backwards compatible so that it can be played on Xbox One! The update was just made this week, so you can simply pop your 360 disc into your Xbox One and start playing right now!

In the game…

“In deep space, on the frontier of human colonization, an ancient pyramid is discovered. When archaeologists probe the pyramid’s secrets they unwittingly trigger an apocalyptic confrontation between vengeful Predators, menacing Aliens, and heavily-armed Colonial Marines. Welcome to Aliens versus Predator, a stunningly-detailed FPS that seamlessly blends the action and intensity of one of the most popular movie franchises of all time. Whether you stalk your prey as a Predator, evolve into the perfect killing machine as an Alien, or use superior firepower as a Colonial Marine, one thing is certain. This will be a battle for the ages.”

  • Master the skills of three deadly species: As a Predator, use your cloaking abilities and multiple vision modes to stalk your enemies while remaining hidden. Then rip out their spines with your wrist blades, or snipe them from afar with your plasma caster. As an Alien, use your finely-honed killer instincts to become the most lethal creature in the galaxy. Traverse any surface at blinding speeds, emerging from the dark to tear off your victims’ heads or impale them with your dagger-sharp tail. As a Colonial Marine, use your diverse arsenal and overwhelming firepower to hold the line against seemingly impossible odds.
  • Discover three unique single-player experiences: Each of the three species has its own unique storyline that intertwines with the others to create a compelling cinematic narrative, inspired by one of the most popular movie franchises of all time.
  • Plunge yourself into intense online multiplayer combat: Take on hordes of online opponents in adrenaline-fueled multiplayer battles. Stalk your prey silently as a Predator, become a nightmarish killing machine as an Alien, or lay down a barrage of lethal fire as a battle-hardened Colonial Marine. Take advantage of each faction’s unique abilities to rise to the top of the leaderboards and become the most dominant species in the universe.

Three Breeds of Warrior. Three Brutal Campaigns. One Relentless Battleground.

Seeing as yesterday was Alien Day, Steam got in on the act with a sale of games based on the franchise. And yes, it’s still very much on for today. Right now, you can grab the following with a 75% discount: Alien: Isolation, its Season Pass, Aliens: Colonial Marines, its DLC, 2010’s Aliens vs. Predator and the Aliens vs. Predator Collection. And while it’s not included in the sale, 2000’s Aliens vs Predator can be snagged for just $5 USD.

The sale is on until Saturday, but if you miss out on it, no need to fret. Humble Bundle is coming through with the same sale, and that one lasts until Monday. So really, if you haven’t already played one of the best Alien games in Alien: Isolation (or one of the not-so-greatest in Aliens: Colonial Marines), here’s your chance to grab them for a sweet price.

And don’t forget about that VR Mod for Isolation (for added scares).

While I’d like to believe that the recent removal of Aliens vs. Predator and Aliens: Colonial Marines — two near-universally maligned games that are perhaps best left forgotten — from the Steam store was due to the fact that they’re both awful and completely unworthy of anyone’s time, my guess is Sega just needs to renew their license.

Whatever the reason is behind their delisting, it hasn’t affected Alien: Isolation or Aliens vs. Predator Classic 2000, and since those are the only two Aliens games that are worth playing, I recommend you look there to get your bug-squashing fix.

I was able to confirm that both games are still available on other platforms, including PS3 and Xbox 360, but seriously, don’t spend your money on them.

A month ago, Dark Horse Comics commenced their highly anticipated ‘Fire and Stone’ crossover series. First we got to mentally (and let’s face it, physically) fondle the premiere title in this family of comic books: ‘Prometheus,’ which served as an introduction to the world of AVP. Then a few weeks ago we were introduced to the ‘Alien’ title, which took us back a step to show us the gruesome events that led up to ‘Prometheus.’ While we have two more weeks until we get to read the ‘Predator’ sister story, today we get to gnaw on the world of ‘Alien Vs. Predator’ and it’s really, really yummy.

STK653009

WRITTEN BY: Christopher Sebela

ART BY: Ariel Olivetti

PUBLISHER: Dark Horse

PRICE: $3.50

RELEASE: October 8, 2014

Reviewed By Bree Odgen

‘AVP: Fire and Stone’ picks up shortly after the events of ‘Prometheus,’ during which the crew that landed on LV-223 was met with some serious danger. Now, back aboard the Geryon Armada, the remaining unharmed crewmembers discuss their next plan of action. That is until…

Some serious shit has hit the fan in the time between these issues. Elden is no longer the Elden we were introduced to in ‘Prometheus.’ He’s humanoid, but alien-like. Exposed muscle, grotesque growths…an all around terrifying mess. He’s angry about some yet unknown event that occurred because of Francis and he’s going to exact his revenge. On top of it all, he’s hanging out with The Aliens like they’re his cats and he’s a 97-year old woman. Something went down and the fact is, we’ll just have to wait and see. Smart move, Dark Horse.

While Elden waits for Galgo to deliver Francis to his Alien-infested ship, the Predators lurk nearby. Olivetti allows us tiny glimpses of them before we even know what’s happening. And just as Elden prepares to take Francis captive, there’s a breach and Predators come pouring in. What happens next is a virtual terror shit show. Elden fucks with the basic functions of the Geryon while Predators do what they do best: hunt and kill. At this point, not only are Elden’s watch-Aliens tearing their way through the crew, the Predators are slicing anything within reach and Elden is taunting all of them over an intercom.

I cannot stress how horrifically palpable these scenes are; how brilliantly Sebela and Olivetti bring these dreadful moments to life. There’s threat upon threat upon threat and none of it feels cheap. It all holds a weight of its own.

The timeline should, by all means, be confusing as hell. But it’s obvious that these writers have spent painstaking hours figuring this out like Monckton’s Eternity Puzzle. In fact, just to heighten the awareness of this fact, there’s this beautifully haunting moment in which Elden repeats an exact line from ‘Prometheus’ saying: “Hello, Francis. I’m Elden. Can you hear me?” But the context is so drastically different, so horribly vile, that it makes you want to scream at the sheer foresight and brilliance of the Fire and Stone writers.

It’s hard to express how insanely immaculate this issue is. You would think that a comic taking place in a matter of minutes, a fall from grace so swift and complete, and a slaughter during which absolutely no one is safe would feel too easy. But it’s meticulous and smart. So very, very smart. Neither of the previous ‘Fire and Stone’ comics had me this excited to see where this crossover event’s going.

Standing fucking ovation.

Also included are two new multiplayer maps for the six different competitive online modes; Deathmatch, Predator Hunt, Infestation, Species Deathmatch, Mixed Species Deathmatch and Domination, as well as two new maps for the “Survival” mode in which a team of up to four Marines fight to survive against the increasing horde of Aliens. Included in that will also be different weather conditions, which I think is awesome and more games should do it. So you could be playing in a rainstorm, or a blizzard, completely changing the game. Screens past the break.

I’ve decided I’m not very good at writing reviews. I don’t use big words. I don’t like using big words. I really hate when you can tell someone used a big word in place of a much simpler small word of the same meaning, just so they can sound smarter. I also like to say awesome, amazing, and cool a lot in my reviews. I sit there and stare at Open Office for a few hours and blank out.

I like to write them like a little kid. Who will straight up tell you what was really cool, and what really sucked about a game. So if you feel like reading my 5 year old brain’s AvP review, feel free to head right on past the break. I’ll let it be known right away, I have not seen any Aliens, Predator, or Aliens Vs Predator movies. And I never played the older Aliens Vs Predator. So I have no prior experience or know how when it comes to any of this. In Aliens Vs Predator on a planet known as BG-386 there has been a colonist mining group, well mining the planet. What do they find? A very old ancient pyramid. When this is uncovered, a long ways away in space, the Predators are alerted of the discovery of their pyramid. They send over Predators to pretty much kill anyone involved so to leave the pyramid buried as they had it before. However, inside the old pyramid the Aliens wake up after centuries sealed below. I hope I got that right, I had a hard time piecing it together, I’m a big boy!

The Marine Campaign

It seems I had more problems with the Marine campaign than I didn’t, but don’t get me wrong I still had a ton of fun playing it. A couple problems I had with the Marines portion of the campaign: One, was the running. You could run about 20 feet and then your guy would get tired. But 3 seconds later you could run another 20 feet. I found it kind of unrealistic. Another thing that I didn’t like was the fact that you were a rookie. It seems like most games lately are taking the easy route in making you the rookie who doesn’t speak a word the entire game. The character T. Aquila. Ugh. Who of course goes by Tequila. She speaks perfect English, and when she says her name, she throws a Spanish accent on it. Which is just something that urks me in general. (Maria Laguerta does it in Dexter and it makes me so mad.) She is very obnoxious, and just an awful character to guide you through the game.

Let’s be honest here. Lack of diversity among human characters in games is really getting to me. I don’t understand how hard it is to even just swap heads out. In a game like this where all the marines have the same bodies and clothing, I swear I have killed that bald Marine about 10,000 times. You put so much effort into a game, can’t you diversify a little more?

You spend most of your time running around inside different bases restoring power to doors, and different areas. Despite that, the game always keeps you on your toes. Blood is almost always pumping as you are doing different things and being chased by creatures beyond this world the entire time. When your radar starts going off beep beep beep, and the dots get closer and closer, beep beep beep, and you still don’t see anything, beep beep beep, and then BAM! You’re dead. Heart attack. The best way to die.

One cool feature, but yet something else I had a problem with was your flares. You had an unlimited number of flares. You could throw a million flares without ever finding new ones. But, they burn out after about 10 seconds. What?! I know I know, once you start making a game too real blah blah blah.

The Alien Campaign

You really count on darkness as your best friend in this because if you rush out on even 2 marines you could get destroyed quickly. You can break almost any light source around you to shield you with darkness in order to perform some stealthy kills. I really love this aspect of the game because it puts you in the shoes (or talons) of the hunter instead of the hunted.

What does get SUPER annoying is the insanely repetitive talk amongst the marines. “Don’t relax just yet marines.” and “Don’t let your guard down.” will be heard hundreds of time before you just end up killing every single marine out of spite alone. The inability for the marines to notice a dead teammate and get worried boggles my mind. Or they will watch me completely destroy one of their teammates and then they will go back to walking around spewing out their repetitive phrases. One of the Marines sounds like Michael from Lost (If anyone get’s the reference), pay close attention to the voices. I can almost hear him yelling “Walt!! Waaaaalt! Don’t let your guard down Walt!”

The ability to use the X button to grab is only peppered in and not as conveniently used as I would like. Where as sometimes I would drop in perfectly on a marine, and hope the X button grab would pop but instead I get wasted. Little things like that scattered throughout a game can begin to really frustrate you.

One of my favorite things though is when you do get the X button grab right and you do a ridiculous kill. Like when you get a view from inside the Alien’s mouth and you chomp a Marine. Super gory deliciousness.

The Predator Campaign

As the Predator you spend your time searching for your fallen brothers in order to overload their wrist technology so no one can get their hands on it. Setting these wrist braces to overload cause a loud annoying noise that definitely attracts attention. So you stand your ground and fight whatever comes at you.

This was probably my favorite campaign out of the 3. There is something about being invisible and being able to lock onto enemies with a laser and blast them into bits that warms my blood. When you are the Alien it nice to be able to climb walls and ceilings and such, but it’s a bit wonky. Where as with Predator you have the ease of locking onto a location above you and super jumping up to it. Then you can lock on to an enemy and lunge at them with ease and kill them. You get a lot of cool fun stuff to defeat your enemies with that also kept this campaign fresh.

You will get the same repetitive dialogue between the marines that you got in the Alien’s campaign. And at this point you will want to stick sharp objects in your ears.

Again, another favorite here is when you get an X button grab kill. Ripping a Marine’s head off and using the retina scanners? Amazing. Or grabbing an Alien and pulling the little guy right out of it’s mouth is completely brutal and completely awesome.

Multiplayer

The multiplayer is great. The fact that there are mixed matches where you can have Marines, Aliens, and Predators is awesome. It really keeps the multiplayer different and fun. I’m really into Infestation mode, which is basically like zombies in Halo. Everyone is a Marine, and 1 Alien is selected. Once the Alien kills a Marine, they become an Alien until the last man is killed. You can really rack up a lot of experience if you are really good at killing Aliens.

In Conclusion

I know I bitched about a lot of things in this game. But I could bitch about a lot of things in every game. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t have fun with it. I had a great time playing the game. Most games have you just play from a Marine esq. standpoint. But being able to play as Aliens and Predator as well is great. Imagine playing Halo and getting to be a grunt. I know, that’s kind of like saying, play as a face hugger the whole game. But you get what I’m saying. If the game was all Marines, it wouldn’t be nearly as cool. There are definitely things that should be changed and improved on, but all in all this is a really fun game.

Final Score: 4/5 Skulls.

Yes today, right now, you can download the multiplayer demo for the upcoming Aliens Vs Predator game. The demo is available from the Xbox Live Marketplace, Playstation Network, and Steam. Check out the Infestation Mode trailer below. I’ve posted Game Trailers until I can get mine to upload.

The demo, yes will give you a shot playing as all 3 species, Marines, Aliens, and Predators. You can go up against others in Multiplayer Deathmatch Mode, on one of the multiplayer levels, known as refinery. “The team at Rebellion has created a truly immersive multiplayer experience with three completely different and compelling playable species. We believe that Aliens vs Predator offers gamers a unique alternative to the current FPS multiplayer games on the market, and sets a precedent for the evolution of multiplayer gaming in the genre,” said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director of SEGA Europe.

“Multiplayer was a huge part of our original AVP game back in 1999, and we’ve kept the spirit of that classic experience in creating the multiplayer for our new Aliens vs Predator. With the demo now gamers can get to grips with each of the three iconic species so they can hone their skills and be ready for when the game launches and battle commences,” said Jason Kingsley, CEO and Creative Director of Rebellion.

The game releases on the 16th of this month for the PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360.

Lance Henriksen has signed on board for the new Aliens Vs Predator video game currently being made by Sega. Some of you are wondering, who is Lance Henriksen? Well he was in Aliens, Alien3 and AVP: Aliens vs. Predator. And on top of that he did voices in Mass Effect, Chronicles Of Riddick Assault On Dark Athena, Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2,  among others.

Lance Henriksen will appear as Karl Bishop Weyland, a descendant of Charles Bishop Weyland, the founder of the infamous Weyland-Yutani corporation from the Aliens universe. He will lend his likeness and voice to the production. “They’ve made me look very good,” said Lance Henriksen, “This is the first time I’ve been fully represented in a game, with my voice and how I look, and the Rebellion guys have done a great job. I might score from this game!” What a bad ass. Look for the game releasing for the PC, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3 in February of 2010.

Aliens Vs Predator is due out the 1st quarter of 2010 for the PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360. And judging by this video below, it looks like it’s coming together very well. In the game you get the choice of either play as the Marines, the Aliens, or of course, the Predators. Obviously taking on the role of either side will change your gameplay dramatically.

The game will also feature an online multiplayer interlacing all 3 different characters into the games. Head past the break for a bit more info. The Marine’s story is an incredible fight against the odds, and the horrors lurking in the dark. Beset on all sides yet armed to the teeth, the Colonial Marine represents humanity’s last stand with the firepower to fight back.

As the Alien, players will discover what it’s like to be the most murderous and lethal creature in the universe, with the ability to traverse any surface with awesome agility in order to get close enough to unleash its deadly teeth and claws.

A master of the hunt, the Predator grants the player a suite of exotic weaponry and equipment with which to stalk its unknowing prey. Earn the greatest honor by ambushing prey up-close and butchering them for a gory trophy kill.

Res3t’s favorite game at E3 this year was Alien Vs Predator. On planet BG-386 a colonist mining group discovers an ancient pyramid containing a dark and horrible secret. Across the stars a race of warriors is alerted to the discovery of their pyramid and a hunting party is dispatched to ensure that it remains sealed at all costs, whilst deep inside the ruined pyramid a malevolent intelligence awakes from centuries of dormancy.

The Marine’s story is an incredible fight against the odds, and the horrors lurking in the dark. Beset on all sides yet armed to the teeth, the Colonial Marine represents humanity’s last stand with the firepower to fight back.

The game comes out the 1st quarter of 2010 for PC, PSP, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360.

At comic-con last week Aliens Vs. Predator: Three World War was announced. I was just sent an amazing teaser image from the upcoming series. The only thing else known about the series is it’s the 2009 relaunch of the Aliens and Predator series with the creative team of John Arcudi and Rick Leonardi. I can only assume the current Aliens and Predator comic relaunches will connect to Three World War since it’s the same creative teams. I’m very excited about this and if the teaser image is what the comic is going to be like, I am pre-ordering it immediately.
