WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Weapons.

With two feature films now under his belt, Zach Cregger is making a name for himself in the horror world. His 2022 shocker Barbarian unfolds in a series of increasingly startling revelations that slowly erode our illusions of safety. His sophomore outing Weapons boasts a similarly cryptic title which clarifies itself in the story’s final act. A shocking tragedy at an elementary school sparks a horrifying tale of parasitic violence and sinister control. As in Barbarian, Cregger offers two female characters who sit on opposite ends of a monstrous spectrum. What unifies Justine (Julia Garner) and the mysterious Gladys (Amy Madigan) is the misogynistic world they both occupy. One suffers from a community primed to vilify women while the other uses patriarchal culture to hide in plain sight.

Justine is the newest teacher at Maybrook Elementary when a strange tragedy befalls the city. On an ordinary day she arrives at work to find a single student in his seat. As we survey the otherwise deserted classroom, we learn that the other children rose at 2:17 a.m. and ran out of their houses into the night. Justine and Alex (Cary Christopher), her remaining student, are extensively questioned but appear to have no knowledge of this strange event. One month later, the children are still missing and the town has turned decisively on Justine. At a tense PTO meeting, the grieving parents harass the young teacher and shout her down when she attempts to express her own pain. The school’s Principal, Marcus (Benedict Wong), advises Justine to go straight home and hide in her house before the brewing mob has a chance to turn violent.

The bulk of this aggression is led by Archer (Josh Brolin), the father of one of her missing students. Not only does he lead the charge of enraged parents, he follows Justine home, terrorizes her from her own front porch, and scrawls the word WITCH on her car in angry, red paint. Intended as a means of public shaming, Justine is now identifiable wherever she goes and only safe inside her house. Not content, Archer pays a visit to the local police chief and again points the finger in Justine’s direction. He’s researched her past employment history and found a minor flaw: she was previously dismissed for having an inappropriate relationship with a colleague. We learn from Marcus that she has a similar history of bending the rules, but has never done anything to harm or threaten a child. Thankfully, law enforcement officials stand firm in their refusal to arrest the benevolent teacher, but the town has been irrevocably poisoned against her.

While this behavior could be chalked up to the frantic actions of a grieving father, we glimpse other indicators of Archer’s toxicity. He barely acknowledges his unseen wife and laments his inability to express love for his son. Flashbacks reveal that Matthew (Luke Speakman) is a cruel bully—possibly a result of this aloof parenting style. Desperate to find his son, Archer visits Erica (Sara Paxton), the mother of Matthew’s classmate. He asks to view ring camera footage of her own daughter’s disappearance, but the similarly grieving mother rejects his request and clearly sends him on his way. But again, Archer will not be denied. He lays in wait for her husband Gary (Justin Long) and confronts the confused man in the driveway—before he has a chance to consult his wife. We immediately cut to Archer inside Erica’s home, viewing footage with Gary while she glowers from the hall.

Exhibiting mild signs of misogyny, Archer is far from the only person harassing Justine. The well-meaning Marcus believes in her innocence, but essentially eliminates her teaching position. What’s more, she’s not to have any contact with her class’s sole survivor and must not be seen on school grounds. An evening out with a former lover, her only means of emotional support, also goes dreadfully wrong. Though Paul (Alden Ehrenreich) insists that he’s single, we learn that this is far from the truth. Not only is he married to Donna (June Diane Raphael), but the couple is trying to conceive a child. When she easily discovers his infidelity, Donna confronts Justine in the liquor store and pours an entire bottle on the cowering teacher’s head. Rather than attack her cheating husband, Donna turns her rage on a vulnerable woman.

It’s a modern version of a story we’ve seen many times. Reminiscent of the 17th century Salem Witch Trials, a frightened population weaponizes their fear and pain by ostracizing an innocent woman. Single and childless, Justine has no one tying her to the community and must rely on scraps of emotional support. She spends her evenings drinking alone and will probably soon be run out of town. It’s not until the tiny teacher is visibly targeted by a strange monster that Archer can see the fallacy in his campaign of harassment.

As Cregger slowly reveals his story, a real witch steps into view. Determined to find her students and clear her name, Justine follows Alex home noticing strange phenomena within the house. Newspapers completely cover each window while Alex’s parents sit in ominous silence. Even cursory investigation would raise the alarm, but officials have already cleared Alex’s name and residents are more concerned with blaming Justine. With nothing left to lose, the disgraced teacher stakes out the house, eventually falling asleep in her car. Late that night, the front door opens and a hideous figure emerges from its inner darkness. A disheveled woman lurches toward Justine with a weapon raised high in the air. She circles the car before climbing inside and snipping a lock of the sleeping woman’s blond curls.

We eventually learn that this is Alex’s Mother (Callie Schuttera), controlled from afar by a sinister witch. Gladys (Amy Madigan) is hovering near death when her younger sister moves her in with the family. No one seems particularly happy about this arrangement, but his mother feels obligated to care for her kin. Arriving under cover of darkness, Gladys immediately takes over the household. Soon after, Alex comes down to breakfast and finds his parents staring at each other in eerie silence. Sitting at the table’s head, Gladys demonstrates her awful power by making them stab themselves in the face with their forks. Threatening to harm them further, she orders Alex to conceal her presence and pretend all is well to the outside world.

We learn that Gladys is responsible for the children’s disappearance and the rash of strange occurrences throughout the town. Fearful of dying, she’s been feeding on the vitality of Alex’s parents, but finds herself in need of more innocent souls. She convinces the terrified boy to collect one personal item from each of his classmates then concocts a spell that draws them to the house. Seventeen children now stand, lifeless, in the dark basement eternally waiting for their next command.

When Justine begins to suspect that Alex is in danger, she begs Marcus to make his own home visit. He begrudgingly invites the boy’s parents in for a conference and is surprised when Gladys shows up instead. Flamboyant and garish, this elderly woman assures the principal that her sister and brother-in-law are perfectly fine while eyeing award ribbons decorating his office. The following day, she shows up on his doorstep frantically begging for his help. Marcus balks at this unwanted intrusion and prepares to send the woman away, but his partner Terry (Clayton Farris) falls for her “damsel in distress” ploy, insisting they invite her into their home. Gladys proceeds to cast a spell in the couple’s kitchen then boldly snips a lock of Terry’s hair. Twisting it around a sinister twig, she takes control of Marcus’ mind and sends him hurtling toward his partner. The now-monstrous man beats Terry to death until Gladys sends him on a mission to kill Justine.

With these twigs, taken from a magical tree, Gladys is able to weaponize humans and send them to attack her chosen targets. While Archer berates Justine at the gas station, a beastly Marcus tracks her down and tackles her in a pool of flammable gas, intent on violently ending her life. Fortunately, Archer steps in to protect the young woman, dragging the Principal off his prey. This gives Justine enough time to evade her weaponized friend until he’s pulverized by a passing car. Unfortunately for Gladys, this public attack finally draws attention her way.

While horrifying, this incident also signals a turning point for Justine. It’s only when Archer witnesses his own target attacked by a more overtly violent threat that he realizes the damage he has caused. The two make awkward amends and begin working together to bring the kids home. Though they face brutal attacks from Gladys’ human weapons, they distract the witch long enough for Alex to cast a spell of his own. Snapping a twig from his aunt’s sacred tree, the boy weaponizes all seventeen children against their captor. No longer comatose in the basement, they chase Gladys through the neighborhood, smashing through windows and walls to reach their prey. They finally pull the screaming woman to the ground and use their bare hands to tear her apart.

Aside from this act of grisly violence, Cregger’s horde of murderous children resembles the angry mob that threatens Justine at the PTO meeting that opens the film. Convinced she is secretly hiding their kids, the enraged parents will stop at nothing to see her punished. This is likely all part of Gladys’ plan. She knows that abducting Justine as well, leaving Alex as the class’s sole survivor, would bring police quickly to her door, interrupting her elaborate design. But as long as the community is more concerned with vilifying a vulnerable woman, she can fly safely under their radar. Justine serves as a handy scapegoat for a seasoned witch who knows exactly what kind of world she inhabits. She doesn’t bother taking control of Justine, confident that generations of internalized misogyny has provided fertile ground for her master plan. The town will cast its own patriarchal spell and weaponize itself against Justine.

A classroom of elementary school children, all save for one, disappearing into the night at 2:17 am without explanation is merely the opening catalyst for the methodically unfurling insanity in writer/director Zach Cregger’s Weapons. Armed with more confidence and a larger sense of scale, the Barbarian filmmaker expands on his ability to keep audiences on their toes. Not just with horror that’s as savage as it is funny, but with a clever disregard for narrative convention designed to keep you guessing until what’s arguably destined to become one of the year’s most talked about finales.

The story picks up in the immediate aftermath of the bizarre vanishing, leaving the small suburban town of Maybrook completely shaken. The fact that all the students who went missing came from Justine Gandy’s (Julia Garner) class marks her as a prime suspect, though neither she nor the sole remaining student, Alex Lilly (Cary Christopher), have any ideas or clues to provide authorities. While that clears them both of police suspicion, the rest of the town believes Justine is culpable or at least knows more than she’s letting on.

Especially Archer Graff (Josh Brolin), the distraught and angry father of one of Maybrook’s missing. As tensions rise, the suburbs descend into paranoia and violence.

Whereas Barbarian toyed with the three-act structure to shift perspectives and expectations in the process, Weapons lets Cregger further break from convention through his ensemble cast. To fully encapsulate the scale of this shocking event and its ripple effects throughout the community, Cregger employs an ambitious narrative structure broken down through chapters, each told from a different perspective. It’s not just Justine’s story, but also Alex’s, Archer’s, beat cop Paul’s (Alden Ehrenreich), slippery drug addict Anthony’s (Austin Abrams), and kind principal Marcus’s (Benedict Wong). Each brings fascinating new viewpoints to the central mystery, all meant to slowly inch us closer to discovering the deranged truth, but also present a twisted vision of the suburbs, warts and all.

What’s most fascinating about this structure is the way Cregger is fearless in writing deeply flawed characters. Justine, at first glance, is the picturesque vision of a doting teacher who deeply cares about her kids. She’s just as shook as the rest of Maybrook, and the way she weathers the constant ire from heartbroken parents earns allegiances early. But she’s also flawed and deeply human, prone to making terrible choices in her personal life. That applies to every Maybrook resident; each tow the line between likable and messy in engrossing and often hysterical ways. Abrams, in particular, stands out as the film’s comedic punching bag.

It’s through these richly rendered and plausibly messy characters that Creggers demonstrates that he’s learned from Barbarian; Maybrook residents are just as prone to making choices that could cost them as Barbarian‘s lead protagonist, but here it’s much more organic to the characters and their bizarre plight.

While Maybrook’s quirks add new dimensions to the mystery that bides its time to take shape, Cregger slowly layers in the horror. Gone is the non-stop suspense and energy of his previous work, replaced by a character-driven story that ramps up the violence and nightmare imagery in a measured clip. The horror is more subdued, at least at first, until Cregger finally pulls the rug out for an absurdly raucous and insane third act that instantly catapults Weapons into a crowd-pleaser for the sickos.

Weapons is shocking, but the shock has value. There’s meaty subtext to be mined, but there’s a refreshing lack of handholding here. Cregger gives just enough to let you draw your own conclusions, without over-explaining itself once the reveals finally come fast and furious. That it does so while delivering satisfying, complete arcs for its ensemble characters is impressive.

This is a horror movie that trusts its audience, while also delivering on practical effects-driven violence, methodically employed scares, and a biting sense of humor that’ll leave you squealing and squirming in equal measure.

Weapons releases in theaters on August 8, 2025.

After the success of their tie-in event with Fortnite for Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners back in March, Warner Bros. is doing it again, this time with Zach Cregger’s upcoming Weapons. Reported by Variety, ahead of Cregger’s sophomore effort landing in theatres next month, creative agency and production studio Sawhorse (who worked on the Sinners: Survive the Night in Fortnite) created a “2:17 AM” event occurring at the designated time in the UTC time zone. And just like the showtimes for Weapons, 2:17 AM is the time in the film where

The event takes place across the four available Fortnite modes, where players will find in-game clues, creepy environments and time-based challenges to complete. According to Nic Hill, co-founder and head of interactive at Sawhorse, the event is a showcase of how studios like Warner Bros. “are innovating beyond traditional trailers.”

The results from Sawhorse’s previous efforts speak for themselves. Sinners ended up with the highest domestic opening for an original film in the past decade, and earned $366 million worldwide against a $90 million budget.

Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Julia Garner (Wolf Man), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Austin Abrams (“The Walking Dead”), Cary Christopher (Mank), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), and Amy Madigan (Field of Dreams) star in the film, in which all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time. The community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.

Weapons opens in theatres on August 8.

Zach Cregger’s (Barbarian) next movie Weapons has been described as a “horror epic” for a while now, and it’s an ambitious branding that the filmmaker is fully embracing in a new chat with Entertainment Weekly this week. Inspired by Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, of all things, Weapons is said to be “more ambitious in every way” than Cregger’s feature debut.

The plot of the mysterious Weapons, which will be released in theaters on August 8, 2025? Entertainment Weekly details, “The moment the clocks turned 2:17 a.m. on a seemingly random Wednesday morning, 17 children in the fictional Pennsylvania town of Maybrook woke from their beds, exited their homes, and ran into the night. They never came back.”

“That mystery is going to propel you through at least half of the movie, but that is not the movie,” Cregger teases. “The movie will fork and change and reinvent and go in new places. It doesn’t abandon that question, believe me, but that’s not the whole movie at all. By the midpoint, we’ve moved on to way crazier shit than that.”

Cregger continues, “I wanted a horror epic, and so I tried to do that. It is more ambitious [than Barbarian] in almost every way. I don’t just mean in terms of the budget, but I just mean creatively. The story is weirder and it’s twistier and it’s bigger. The set pieces are definitely bigger. It’s just a bigger, weirder movie than Barbarian is.”

On that note, Cregger’s two horror movies may exist within the very same universe…

Dive deeper into the mystery on MaybrookMissing.com.

The cast for Cregger’s new film includes Josh Brolin (Dune 2), Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), Alden Ehrenreich (Cocaine Bear), Benedict Wong (3 Body Problem), Amy Madigan (Antlers), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives).

So far, plot details have been tightly guarded for writer-director Zach Cregger‘s mysterious follow-up to Barbarian, Weapons. That is, until now. New footage was previewed tonight at CinemaCon, reported by Variety, revealing new story clues.

New Line Cinema will release Weapons in theaters August 8, 2025.

Interestingly, the only information we’ve had for Weapons was the description that Cregger’s latest is “a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.” An unexpected reference for a horror movie.

Variety described the reel shown to the CinemaCon crowd, indicating something in the vein of Children of the Corn, with Wolf Man‘s Julia Garner starring as an elementary school teacher who arrives to work one morning only to find her entire class of kids went missing the night before.

“Because the night before, at 2:17 a.m., every kid woke up, got out of bed, walked downstairs and into the dark and they never came back,” a child’s voiceover says in the footage shown.

New Line Cinema chief Richard Brener described the film as “intriguing and unpredictable, with a nice helping of batshit insane. We think you’ll appreciate the ride.” Cregger himself said the project is “a movie that unravels and reinvents itself as it goes.” That sounds like it’ll follow the narrative left turns of his debut feature.

The cast for the horror film also includes Josh Brolin (Dune 2), Alden Ehrenreich (Cocaine Bear), Benedict Wong (3 Body Problem), Amy Madigan (Antlers), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives).

Weapons has been rated “R” for: “Strong bloody violence and grisly images, language throughout, some sexual content and drug use.”

All of this sounds exciting. It’s also worth noting that Weapons was initially dated for January 2026 release, which means that there’s a lot of confidence behind this one. With an August 2025 release date, expect to see and hear a lot more about Cregger’s highly anticipated film soon.

Jenn and I have spent the first part of the month dissecting fictionalized adaptations of cults, including Jim Jones and Jonestown (listen), as well as Ti West’s The Sacrament (listen). Then we spent the last few weeks looking at David Koresh and the Branch Davidians (listen), which led to an infamous 51-day stand-off and accompanying siege on Waco.

The Paramount+ series was always going to be biased because it is based on two books written by men involved in the siege: cult survivor David Thibodeau’s A Place Called Waco, as well as Gary Noesner’s Stalling for Time: My Life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator.

What frustrates, though, is how their stories wind up being given priority. In our discussion of the first half of the series (listen), Jenn and I hoped that the female “characters” – played by actors like Andrea Riseborough, Julia Garner, and Melissa Benoist – would be given more to do in the back half.

Instead, we were aghast to discover that the series not only continues to prioritize Koresh (Taylor Kitsch), Tibs (Rory Culkin) and Noesner (Michael Shannon), but that the women exist exclusively as pawns to highlight how tragic the outcome of Waco is.

It’s pretty gross..

Episode 14: Waco (2018) Episodes 4-6

Ready for the fiery finale? Jenn and Joe tackle episodes 4-6 of Paramount+s Waco, which wraps up the 51-day siege of the FBI on the Branch Davidian compound.

Up for discussion: extreme emotional manipulation, a lack of female stories, and who ultimately gets the blame

Plus: the show’s Libertarian agenda draws a big rant from both of us (and this was recorded *before* the election results!)

Next week: Jenn and I begin a two-month journey discussing fictionalized adaptations of one of America’s most prolific serial killers: Ted Bundy. We’re kicking things off with a primer on “Ted” and his crimes.

And if you want even more Murder Made Fiction, be sure to check out the pod’s Patreon feed, where we have ~21 hours of bonus content.

Episodes this month include episode-by-episode coverage of Ryan Murphy’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story as well as episodes on the Netflix documentary The Menendez Brothers and a full-length primer explaining the case.

Get ready to revisit the Bramford apartment building this Fall. Paramount+ today announced that the all-new original film set before Rosemary’s Baby, Apartment 7A, will premiere this Halloween season exclusively on the streaming service.

Set in 1965 New York City, the film tells the story prior to the horror classic Rosemary’s Baby, exploring what happened in the apartment before Rosemary Woodhouse moved in.

Our first look image gives a closer peek at the Bramford. Check it out above.

Directed by Relic filmmaker Natalie Erika James, the film stars Julia Garner (Ozark, Wolf Man), Dianne Wiest (Mayor of Kingstown), Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe) and Kevin McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean film series). Additional supporting cast includes Marli Siu (Anna and the Apocalypse), Andrew Buchan (All the Money in the World), Rosy McEwen (Blue Jean) and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Wonka).

In Apartment 7A, “When a struggling, young dancer (Garner) suffers a devastating injury, she finds herself drawn in by dark forces when a peculiar, well-connected, older couple promises her a shot at fame.”

“Apartment 7A is the perfect way to kick off the Halloween season,” said Jeff Grossman, Executive Vice President, Programming, Paramount+. “Director Natalie Erika James and the prodigious creative team have crafted a chilling and clever new entry into the genre.”

The psychological thriller is a Paramount+ original movie in association with Paramount Pictures and is based on the novel Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin. Directed by James, with a screen story by Skylar James and a script by Natalie Erika James & Christian White and Skylar James, the film is executive produced by Vicki Dee Rock and Alexa Ginsburg, and is produced by John Krasinski, Allyson Seeger, p.g.a, Michael Bay, Andrew Form, p.g.a, and Brad Fuller.

While Paramount+ hasn’t announced the official debut date just yet, expect Apartment 7A to arrive just in time for Halloween as part of the streamer’s Peak Screaming collection that offers a broad and popular lineup of new originals, fan-favorite horror movies and iconic Halloween episodes from beloved series.

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man) is headed back into the world of the Universal Monsters with a new take on Wolf Man, and Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has just signed on.

The Emmy-winner will star alongside Christopher Abbott (Poor Things) in the film for Blumhouse and Universal. Wolf Man will howl its way into theaters on October 25, 2024.

Wolf Man stars Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.

Stay tuned for more on this new take on the Universal Monsters icon as we learn it.

Paramount Players has assembled an all-star squad for their latest horror offering.

While Julia Garner got her start in our genre, starring in films such as Martha Marcy May Marlene, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, The Last Exorcism Part II, and We Are What We Are, her talent wasn’t recognized by the mainstream until her breakout performance in “Ozark” (watch the below video), which concludes later this month on Netflix.

Garner, a rising mega-talent, is set to topline Paramount Players’ Apartment 7A, which is being produced by Platinum Dunes (The Purge, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th) and A Quiet Place director John Krasinski, reports Deadline.

The superteam doesn’t stop there as Relic‘s Natalie Erika James is attached to direct and co-wrote the latest script with Christian White based on a draft by Skylar James.

Described as a psychological thriller, plot details are under wraps.

John Krasinski and Allyson Seeger are producing via Sunday Night as well as Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, who will produce via Platinum Dunes.

We’ve been obsessing ever since we saw the first taste of Alexa Vega in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills.

Now, she’s taking on a role in TWC-Dimension’s August 22 release of Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.

She’ll play Gilda, says this new poster, which rivals any beauty shot of Eva Green and Jessica Alba. I think it’s safe to say the new Sin City features a whole lotta strong women – and we like that.

We also just updated the article with two clips, one that doesn’t carry an empty threat, the other putting Marv’s rampage on display.

The sequel is about Dwight McCarthy planing to have his vengeance against the woman who betrayed him, Ava Lord, while Nancy is trying to cope with Hartigan’s death.

Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Eva Green, Josh Brolin, Bruce Willis, Juno Temple, Jaime King, Rosario Dawson, Michael Madsen, Jamie Chung, Dennis Haysbert, Crystal McCahill, Christopher Meloni, Jeremy Piven, Julia Garner, Ray Liotta and Stacy Keach all star.

The MPAA has been especially bad.

Anytime I hear about the MPAA censoring a poster it reminds me of how they forced Universal to remove a single sperm from the one-sheet of the 2004 Seed of Chucky (see it here).

Apparently, Eva Green is just too sexy for the poster of her upcoming sequel to Sin City, or so the MPAA believes. The actress is seen in a sheer robe in the poster for Dimension Films’ and Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Page Six shares the art and reports that the poster was disapproved by the MPAA “for nudity — curve of under breast and dark nipple/areola circle visible through sheer gown.”

Dimension declined to comment but it is believed execs are working on a compromise with the MPAA before the sequel opens August 22.

I guess the thing that confuses me is that the first film is remembered for its style, not necessarily its story. The sequel looks to retread that style exactly, without adding anything new. Maybe it tops the 2005 film in the story department?

While we already shared these images out of the latest issue of EW, we now have clean versions of the first stills from Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, targeted for theaters on August 22, 2014.

Jessica Alba returns as exotic dancer Nancy Callahan. Clearly, she’s aging like fine wine as this still is snake-charming me into submission.

You’ll also see Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Johnny (thank God he doesn’t have Bruce Willis’ nose for this role), and Mickey Rourke as Marv.

Bruce Willis, Juno Temple, Jaime King, Rosario Dawson, Michael Madsen, Jamie Chung, Dennis Haysbert, Crystal McCahill, Christopher Meloni, Josh Brolin, Jeremy Piven, Ray Liotta, Julia Garner, Eva Green and Stacy Keach also star.

The film is about Dwight McCarthy planing to have his vengeance against the woman who betrayed him, Ava Lord, while Nancy is trying to cope with Hartigan’s death.

The Parkers are cannibals. Simple as that. They’ve been cannibals for generations and are intent on continuing the tradition. We Are What We Are is a play on the typical traditions most families enjoy, like Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners, and twisting them in an absurd way. The issue is the stylized form in which this story is told loses some of the potential impact it could have.

The American remake of the Mexican film of the same name, We Are What We Are tries to explain why the Parkers do what they do by adding the history of their family to the mix, unlike the original. Iris and Rose are sisters trying to carry on the family tradition after their mother passes away, even though they are reluctant, because they simply feel a sense of duty. A constant rainstorm has hit the rural town in which they live, causing a deep sense of depression to set the initial mood of the story. Along with the incessantly damp conditions, the film itself is dark and grainy, despite being a Blu-ray. Yes, in addition to the atmosphere, everything appears to be overly gray and drab – even indoors, which adds to the desperation the Parker sisters feel as they have to slaughter humans for supper. While it is an interesting setup, the film as a whole lacks in surprises or twists. More or less, what you expect to happen, happens – right up to the end.

The special features on the Blu-ray include an hour long making of featurette. This is one of the most stylized behind the scenes bonus features I have ever seen. The entire thing is ‘fly on the wall’ footage. No one ever speaks to the camera. A theme is never necessarily followed (makeup effects, locations, music). So, if you interested in learning anything about the making of a film by standing partially behind a wall or bush while watching it being made, this one is for you. Interviews with the cast and crew are included on the disc as well and offer some insight into the changes the film had in the remake process. Commentary is included with the cast and crew as well. The trailer is included and is actually a bit more entertaining than the film as a whole. The quality of the film, again, is murky, and the sound mix is good despite there not being anything especially effective in it that adds to the film.

Cannibal stories normally are terribly gruesome and overzealous, and in that respect We Are What We Are is a different approach to the dark subject. However, the constant dim style of the film itself outweighs what could be an intensely engaging story.

Following the groundbreaking film that grossed $160 million worldwide, the newly titled Sin City: A Dame to Die For reunites Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller for the next chapter in this trailblazing series. Weaving together stunning visuals with an uncompromising, hard-boiled plot, the film promises more lurid tales from the various residents of Basin City. For whatever reason, Dimension Films decided to remove “Kill” from the title…

With a star-studded cast that includes the legendary Bruce Willis (Pulp Fiction), Academy Award nominee Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin (Milk), Jessica Alba (Spy Kids 4), and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises), Sin City: A Dame to Die For ensures an experience like no other!

Check out the art on display at the ongoing AFM. The sequel hits theaters August 22, 2014.

eOne has shared with Bloody an exclusive batch of animated stills from Stake Land director Jim Mickle’s We Are What We Are, the remake of the awesome Mexican thriller flick starring Julia Garner, Bill Sage, Wyatt Russell, and Ambyr Childers.

The images, while not necessarily connected, do tell quite a bit about chilling film in theaters September 27.

“In We Are What We Are, a seemingly wholesome and benevolent family, the Parkers have always kept to themselves, and for good reason. Behind closed doors, patriarch Frank (Sage) rules his family with a rigorous ferver, determined to keep his ancestral customs intact at any cost. As a torrential rainstorm moves into the area, tragedy strikes and his daughters Iris (Childers) and Rose (Garner) are forced to assume responsibilities that extend beyond those of a typical family. As the unrelenting downpour continues to flood their small town, the local authorities begin to uncover clues that bring them closer to the secret that the Parkers have held closely for so many years.”

Here’s Ryan Daley’s review out of the Sundance Film Festival.

I kind of don’t understand why they’re selling a horror film by showing photos of people standing around, it’s boring. Give us some cannibal action!

After premiering to mixed review out of the Sundance Film Festival (I liked it), Stake Land director Jim Mickle’s We Are What We Are remake is heading to the Cannes market. With that, the sales agents have released the first ever footage from the cannibal flick starring Julia Garner, Bill Sage, Wyatt Russell, and Ambyr Childers.

In it we get a taste – pun intended – of the family of cannibals. They’re enjoying soup in an extremely unsettling setting.

“A seemingly wholesome and benevolent family, the Parkers have always kept to themselves, and for good reason. Behind closed doors, patriarch Frank rules the roost with a rigorous fervor, determined to keep his ancestral customs intact at any cost. As a torrential rainstorm moves into the area, tragedy strikes and his daughters Iris and Rose are forced to assume responsibilities that extend beyond those of a typical family. The most important task the girls face is putting meat on the table— but not the kind that can be found at the local supermarket. As the unrelenting downpour continues to flood their small town, local authorities begin to uncover clues that bring them closer to the secret that the Parkers have held closely for so many years.“

Since CBS Films wouldn’t screen the film for critics, Evan Dickson hit a midnight screening of Ed Gass-Donnelly’s The Last Exorcism Part II, now in theaters everywhere, in hopes of witnessing the last great exorcism. Instead, he felt duped by yet another snail-paced film jam-packed with filler.

“Since this installment drops the POV approach I was actually kind of excited for the format shakeup here, stupidly thinking that maybe things would be sped along and an actual story would be told,” said Dickson in his review. “Nope! If anything, this new sequel breaks new ground in treading water, wasting time and general narrative inertia. It’s an almost Herculean feat of nothingness.”

It’s sort of a shame, too, because he says Ashley Bell’s performance is pretty great: “Bell’s depiction of Nell is good enough to deserve a better movie. At one point I considered giving the film a pass on that merit alone” that was until he realized there were still 70 minutes left in the movie…

The Last Exorcism Part 2 made me long for the comparatively breakneck pace of the first film. While there’s some fascinating stuff happening in found footage on an indie level, the mainstream features hinging on the conceit are still (for the most part) stuck in the “nothing happens for the first 80 minutes” mode. Since this installment drops the POV approach I was actually kind of excited for the format shakeup here, stupidly thinking that maybe things would be sped along and an actual story would be told. Nope! If anything, this new sequel breaks new ground in treading water, wasting time and general narrative inertia. It’s an almost Herculean feat of nothingness.

Unencumbered by the justification of camera angles, The Last Exorcism Part 2 roams free in the slow burn wilderness of modest expectations. It picks up right where the first film left off, looks around, and scurries into oblivion. Nell Sweetzer – played by the quite good Ashley Bell – still isn’t quite right. After she crawls into the wrong bed in the wrong house she’s taken in by the kindly Frank Merle [Muse Watson], who places her in what basically amounts to a halfway house for troubled girls. Ostensibly troubled, I should say, since the movie can’t be bothered to develop any of them beyond establishing one girl’s disregard for stereo imaging by sharing her iPod earbuds with Nell five seconds after meeting her. Uninterestingly enough, this may be the first halfway house in cinema history populated entirely by normal people.

Nell gets a job as a maid at a local hotel and finds herself intrigued by all of the carnal sounds emitting from its hallways. This is actually one area in which the film does some nice character work. You can sense Nell’s temptation, not only to explore her own sexuality – but to be normal. I’d be lying if I said there weren’t a few nice character beats here featuring her grappling with New Orleans, and life, in general. But short films have character beats too and there’s no reason this movie needed to be longer than a 15 minute webisode. The film just plays these beats over and over again like a mobius strip until it looks at its watch and decides it’s time for some sort of truncated third act. Truly, any sense of escalation is pure wishful thinking on the part of the audience after watching the same scenario unfold countless times.

Finally, the film realizes that it’s hit the mandatory minimum length for a theatrical feature and decides to wrap things up. Director Ed Gass-Donnelly, having wisely kept things in neutral for 75 minutes, needs only to tap slightly on the accelerator to establish that this sputtering wretch is indeed drawing to a close. There’s a quick exorcism (voodoo this time) that utterly lacks the visceral impact of the first film, a brief return to the halfway house and a denouement punctuated by flashes of what may be the worst CGI flames to ever leap out of a DCP.

It’s a shame because The Last Exorcism Part 2 features some good performances and decent technical work. Bell’s depiction of Nell is good enough to deserve a better movie. At one point I considered giving the film a pass on that merit alone. But that was before I realized I’d only been in the theater for 18 minutes and there were 70 left to go.

“Continuing where the first film left off, Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) is found alone and terrified in the woods. Back in the relative safety of civilization, Nell realizes that she can’t remember entire portions of the previous months only that she is the last surviving member of her family. Just as Nell begins the difficult process of starting a new life, the evil force that once possessed her is back with other, unimaginably horrific plans that mean herlast exorcism was just the beginning.”

Ashley Bell returns as Nell in The Last Exorcism Part II later this week, so it was a good opportunity to catch up with the actress to talk about the differences between this new sequel and the film we originally thought would be The Last Exorcism. Bell discussed where Nell is in her life, the temptations of New Orleans, sympathizing with the Devil and a potential third film in the franchise.

In theaters this Friday, March 1st from director Ed Gass-Donnelly, the sequel continues where the first film left off. “Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) is found alone and terrified in the woods.

Andrew Sensenig, Spencer Treat Clark, Muse Watson, David Jensen, Judd Lormand, Joe Chrest, Julia Garner, Louis Herthum, Tarra Riggs, Ashlynn Ross, Cristina Franco, Raeden Greer, E. Roger Mitchell and Boyana Balta also star. The film is once again produced by Eli Roth.

So where is your character now in relation to the first film?

It picks up right where the last film left off. We don’t know what state she’s in, we don’t know if she’s in shock or if she’s got traumatic stress or how broken she is. This film is Nell’s story and it was so much fun to continue telling that story and to see the world through her eyes. She’s been so sheltered she does’t even know what an iPod is and she’s thrown right into the middle of New Orleans right in the middle of Mardis Gras. There’s temptation everywhere and she has to pick between good and evil.

Mardis Gras certainly seems like an apt way to establish that contrast.

Yeah, and what was really cool about that is we actually filmed in Mardis Gras. There was a skeleton crew, it was Ed [Gass-Donnelly], the cameraman and myself and I went out in costume to experience it as Nell. There’s such a childlike quality to Nell, like she’s seeing everything for the first time and it was fun to smell all those smells and touch all those costumes [as her]. What would she get scared of? What would she perceive as dangerous? There’s temptation everywhere.

Not only do you have to think about Nell’s internal life, I imagine you’d have to think about the internal life of the entity that is possessing her.

With all the roles I play, a big thing is that I love all of the characters I play. I use the word “love” because I need to get behind them. I need to understand where they’re coming from and sympathize with what they feel. Nell is cracked and shattered from the first film and I had to pick up the pieces and put them back together and that’s where the Devil slips in. That’s where the doubt slips in. That’s where the fear slips in and she really has to pick between holding onto herself or getting tempted to go against her nature.

How else did New Orleans influence the film?

A big part of it is the voodoo culture that exists in New Orleans. A lot of that has crept its way into the exorcisms. And there’s a big difference in what a voodoo exorcism elicits as opposed to anything done in the previous film. What comes out of the voodoo powers in this film is… well… when the devil decides to get revenge, you’ve got to see it.

Depending on how well this film performs, are there plans for a third?

There’s a wait and see approach, but yeah there have been [discussions]. There’s a twist at the end [of Part 2] that is literally so shocking! I would love to step back into my Doc Martens for a third time.

I haven’t been a huge fan of the art released thus far for CBS Films’ The Last Exorcism Part II, their sequel to the found-footage horror opening in theaters March 1.

The new graphic poster, revealed by MTV, comes from artist Rich Knepprath and was created in anticipation of the new horror movie from producer Eli Roth. It taps into the 1970’s vibe of the film, which stars Ashley Bell as Nell Sweetzer, who managed to survive the demonic encounter from the original found footage film.

“Continuing where the first film left off, Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) is found alone and terrified in the woods. Back in the relative safety of civilization, Nell realizes that she can’t remember entire portions of the previous months only that she is the last surviving member of her family.
