After dipping into the world of H.P. Lovecraft in Re-Animator (listen) and checking out an early adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray (listen), somehow we’re already on our third episode of February. And while the holiday doesn’t line up, we couldn’t pass up a chance to revisit Friday the 13th (2009) for its fifteenth anniversary.

In the Marcus Nispel remake, a group of friends travel to the palatial country house of Trent (Travis Van Winkle) near what was once Camp Crystal Lake. As Trent’s girlfriend Jenna (Danielle Panabaker) bonds with Clay (Jared Padalecki) over the disappearance of his sister Whitney (Amanda Righetti), their friends Chewie (Aaron Yoo), Bree (Julianna Guill), Lawrence (Arlen Escarpeta), Nolan (Ryan Hansen) and Chelsea (Willa Ford) are being picked off one by one by Jason Voorhees (Derek Mears).

Who will survive their encounter with survivalist Jason? Can anything top the extended opening that condenses the first four films? And do those fields of pot actually matter? (It’s possible not even screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift know the answer to that last one!)

Vacation Month kicked off with a deep, uh, cave dive, into one of our personal favorite films: Neil Marshall’s 2005 masterpiece The Descent. Then we explored the world of perversity (and goat-fucking) in Nico Mastorakis’ 1976 video nasty Island of Death. Now, we’re heading to Fiji to have our wildest fantasies fulfilled in…..Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island (oof).

In the film, the enigmatic Mr. Roarke (Michael Peña) makes the secret dreams of his lucky guests come true at a luxurious but remote tropical resort, but when the fantasies turn into nightmares, the guests have to solve the island’s mystery in order to escape with their lives.

Episode 87 – Fantasy Island (2020)

Since we’re in the middle of “Vacation Month,” we’re taking a vacation! Enjoy this Patreon-exclusive (well, not anymore) episode that we recorded back in February for our loyal Patrons. Congrats, all you non-Patrons. Here’s a taste of what life is like on the wild side.

Prep your boring, inane (sex?) fantasies, because we are en route to Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island. This is the second Blumhouse production in as many months to feature pretty people battling villains with black goo coming out of their eyes; it’s also the second feature in a row from writer/director Jeff Wadlow to feature a gay Asian character, so someone’s got a fetish.

Up for discussion: Trace thinks this film is entertaining and stupid, while Joe thinks it is lazy and boring. We both agree, however, that the twist makes NO SENSE. Of course neither does the island’s geography, or the number of characters, or its resolution. Oh, and there’s the fun implications of suggesting being bullied turns you into a stalker/killer.

Thankfully we have goddesses Maggie Q and Lucy Hale (plus everyone’s favorite lovable asshole, Ryan Hansen) to keep us entertained as we wade through this nearly 2-hour train wreck. Remember when we said January/February horror doesn’t suck? Well…we may have spoken too soon.
