Fresh out of San Diego Comic Con, we’ve got your first look at the upcoming ninth season of “The Walking Dead” today, which promises to be something of a fresh start for the show. Not only has Angela Kang taken over as showrunner, but Season 9 is reportedly going to be the final season for Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes, which means he could die at any point.
The trailer has a Wild West feel to it, with Negan locked up in prison and Sheriff Grimes desperately trying to bring together everyone who survived his wrath. That of course includes Daryl and Maggie, both of whom aren’t sold on the idea of keeping Negan alive. It seems they’re going into business for themselves, adding a new wrinkle to the group dynamic.
New settings. New drama. New characters. Watch the SDCC trailer below!
“We’re playing with time in the season, so we get to jump forward in the story,” new showrunner Angela Kang recently noted.
Kang further detailed, “We’re working on a season that has a really fresh look and feel. We come in on some pretty fun stuff. I’m really focusing a lot on the core character relationships in the show that have kind of been long-lasting, as well as all of our wonderful series regulars.”
“We’re going to see some really great stories with the women in our show, particularly,” she added. “And I think for people who are really invested in Michonne, Maggie or Carol, there’s such great material for them. For people who are looking for that specifically, they will see some really incredible work from our women.”
“The Walking Dead” will return on October 7.
