[Video] Did “The Walking Dead” Just Top the Shocking Darkness of the “Look at the Flowers” Episode?

From the beginning, AMC’s “The Walking Dead” made it crystal clear that even children aren’t safe in the post apocalypse. In the very first episode of the series, Rick Grimes was memorably forced to shoot a little zombie girl in the head, splattering her brains across the pavement. And who could forget Carol’s daughter Sophia, similarly put down by Rick after reanimation.

Speaking of Carol, one of the most shocking episodes in the show’s history was Season 4’s “The Grove,” wherein Carol reluctantly shot the deranged young Lizzie in the back of the head, tearfully telling her to “look at the flowers.” Last night’s “Scars” put Michonne in a similarly heartbreaking position, making for another shocking episode that has people talking.

“Scars” took place in both the past and present, serving to explain why Michonne had decided (post-Rick) to close off Alexandria and focus only on protecting those inside its walls. This had been an unanswered bit of storytelling since the massive time jump earlier in the season, and the episode also finally explained the origin of Michonne and Daryl’s titular scars.

When Michonne was pregnant with “Rick Junior,” a childhood friend was let inside the walls of Alexandria by a trusting Michonne, who learned the hard way that not even old friends can be trusted in the new world. Played by “True Blood” and “Hannibal” actress Rutina Wesley, Jocelyn prowled the post-apocalypse with an army of deadly children by her side, and “Scars” tells us that she had stabbed Michonne in the back and kidnapped Judith and several other Alexandria kids in an attempt to turn them evil. Michonne was ultimately forced to kill not just her childhood pal, but also an entire group of children that were out for her blood.

Tastefully executed in such a way that we never actually see the children get dismembered – instead, we watch Michonne slice up zombies in the present as a contrast – but no less shocking or disturbing regardless, Michonne is forced to use her sword on a group of weapon-wielding children, all the while pregnant with her own child. Yeah. They went *dark* last night.

Driven by an incredible performance from Danai Gurira, “Scars” pushed boundaries to deliver a heartbreaking but hopeful hour of television. While we were forced to confront the dark horrors that led Michonne to close off Alexandria even to good friends, we were also shown (in the present) why Michonne decides to ultimately drop her guard just a little bit and reconsider her stance. As it turns out, Judith remembers what had happened to her years prior, but even she doesn’t want to close off the rest of the world. And off to the Kingdom’s fair they go.
