Netflix’s prequel series “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” will arrive on Friday, August 30, and as we’ve been promised from the beginning, very little CGI has been used to take us back to the magical land Jim Henson and Frank Oz first brought to the screen back in 1982. The new series, confirmed by the recent trailer, is loaded with old school puppets, created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and Brian Froud, the original feature’s conceptual designer!
In the latest issue of Pilot TV (via Empire), “Age of Resistance” director Louis Leterrier talks pushing practical puppetry to new heights… in a filmmaking climate dominated by CGI.
“We are throwing everything at this,” Leterrier tells Pilot TV. “Nobody’s fooled by CG any more. We know when something is CG. Puppets, we know someone had to [work them]… And we’re pushing puppeteering beyond anything anyone has done before.”
He added, “Even if you haven’t seen the movie, it’s still really exciting.”
