One of my favorite newer shows was Netflix’s “The OA”, which starred Brit Marling as a blind woman who disappeared seven years ago only to suddenly return with her sight restored. Now referring to herself as The OA, or Original Angel, she then recruits a small team to help rescue other people who have disappeared by opening a portal to another dimension.
Co-created by Zal Batmangli, the Season 2 finale was an earthquake of a shocker that could either act as a series finale or the beginning of a much larger and crazier third season. Unfortunately, Netflix is opting for the former as Variety reports that the streaming service has canceled “The OA”. It’s unfortunate considering there were plans for a full five seasons.
“We are incredibly proud of the 16 mesmerizing chapters of ‘The OA,’ and are grateful to Brit and Zal for sharing their audacious vision and for realizing it through their incredible artistry,” said Cindy Holland, vice president of original content for Netflix. “We look forward to working with them again in the future, in this and perhaps many other dimensions.”
We hope that this is an honest statement from Netflix as both Marling and Batmangli are rare talents who have the knack for thinking outside the box. If you’re a fan of “The OA”, make sure to check out the duo’s must-see indie feature film Sound of My Voice.
