“Maniac Cop”: Nicolas Winding Refn Promises a “Neon-Soaked” and “Cocaine-Fueled” HBO Series!

It was announced last week that Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) and John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning) are getting behind the camera for a series based on William Lustig’s Maniac Cop, with HBO giving the series adaptation of the 1988 film a green light.

“Set in Los Angeles, Maniac Cop is told through a kaleidoscope of characters, from cop to common criminal. A killer in uniform has uncaged mayhem upon the streets. Paranoia leads to social disorder as a city wrestles with the mystery of the exterminator in blue – is he mere mortal, or a supernatural force?”

“This show will be an unadulterated, action-packed horror odyssey,” Refn said in the initial press release that was shared by Deadline. “Given the current state of the world, though, Maniac Cop will also be a strong commentary on the decline of civilization.”

Refn took to Twitter to add to the hype, tweeting:

Maniac Cop will be my version of a cocaine-fueled, neon-soaked, bubble gum-wrapped, mayhem-infused, speed-driven universe of thrill-seekers who are consumed by that ever-present struggle of good vs. evil…but evil is winning.”

This shouldn’t come as a surprise if you’ve seen Refn’s Drive, The Neon Demon, Only God Forgives and most recently his Amazon series “Too Old to Die Young”.

Refn and Hyams will both executive produce and direct, with Refn serving as show-runner. William Lustig will also exec produce the byNWR Originals series.

You know video game adaptations are hot when even Golden Axe is making the leap to the screen. And indeed it is, with Deadline reporting that the Sega Genesis video game franchise that debuted back in 1989 is getting an animated series at Comedy Central.

Comedy Central has given “Golden Axe” a 10-episode order, Deadline reports today.

The voice cast for the animated series from CBS Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film includes Matthew Rhys (The Americans)Danny Pudi (Mythic Quest), Lisa Gilroy (Jury Duty), Liam McIntyre (Spartacus) and Carl Tart (Grand Crew).

“Described as a hilarious and loving homage to Sega’s video game series, Golden Axe follows veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they once again battle to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder who just won’t seem to stay dead. Fortunately, this time they have the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib on their side.”

Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Joe Chandler (American Dad!) will co-write the first episode and executive produce the series, with Chandler serving as showrunner.

The original Golden Axe video game was released in 1989, followed by sequels in 1991, 1992 and 1993. The series got a modern day upgrade with Golden Axe: Beast Rider in 2008.
