It was announced a few months back that Toonami and Production IG USA were aligning to animate Uzumaki, based on the supernatural horror manga by legendary author Junji Ito.
Directed by Hiroshi Nagahama, the series will feature music by Hereditary’s Colin Stetson.
Written and illustrated by Ito, the original manga series told the story of the citizens of Kurōzu-cho, a fictional city that is plagued by a supernatural curse involving spirals.
The four-episode mini-series will premiere on Toonami in 2020.
Crunchyroll shared a brief interview with horror legend Junji Ito, who explained why he was excited for this new adaptation that’s set to be produced in black and white “out of respect for the original”. He talks about Hiroshi Nagahama’s attempt to bring realism to his films, something he also strived for with his art.
