Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Natalie Dormer

Returning to the world of “Penny Dreadful”, Showtime has shared with EW the first ever photo from the forthcoming spinoff “Penny Dreadful: City of Angelsand it features Natalie Dormer as Magda, a shape-shifting demon and “agent of chaos” in 1930s Los Angeles.

A spiritual descendant of the original “Penny Dreadful” story set in Victorian-era London, “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

At its core, Dormer tells the magazine the show is about the “demonization of the other,” adding that her shape-shifting hell queen is a “delicious, multidimensional thrill,” an “agent of chaos” who can “sow the seeds of disorder.”

In the first season arriving in 2020, we’ll meet three of Magda’s manifestations as humans. Says the actress, “The audience will discover who those identities are as they continue to watch the show.”
