“The Walking Dead”: Who Is That Strange New Character in That Strange New Location?

Just two more episodes now remain in the tenth season of “The Walking Dead,” with last night’s “Look at the Flowers” sending Carol off on a journey to find herself, Daryl and Negan off on a journey to bond over a common enemy, and Beta off on a journey to, well, communicate with the growling decapitated head of the undead Alpha and rediscover his musical past.

Another storyline at play in Episode 10.14 sent Ezekiel, Eugene and Yumiko out on a journey to meet up with Eugene’s new friend Stephanie, but it wasn’t Stephanie they found in the final moments of the episode. Instead, the trio came across a city filled with zombies posed in various different positions and outfits to simulate a time gone by, and it wasn’t long before they discovered the person responsible for that bizarre recreation of the past: Princess.

Who is the high energy, purple-haired Princess? Her real name is Juanita Sanchez, we’ll learn in the second-to-last episode of season 10, but fans of the comic book already know that.

Played by Paola Lázaro on the show, Princess was introduced by Robert Kirkman in #Issue 171 of the comic series back in September 2017. The colorful character, rocking a bright pink jacket, holding a machine gun and looking very Borderlands on the issue’s striking cover, was discovered by a group including Michonne and Yumiko; she’s a lone survivor who hadn’t seen another human in a year.

Calling herself “The Princess of Pittsburgh,” Juanita is a bit of a silly-but-good-natured prankster, initially making Michonne question her but ultimately being accepted into the group.

You can read more about Juanita Sanchez/Princess/The Princess of Pittsburgh over on “The Walking Dead” Wiki. As always, keep in mind that things from the comic books are often altered for the television series. But what’s in store for Princess as a character on the AMC series, you ask? Showrunner Angela Kang teases in a chat with Entertainment Weekly:

“She’s a really fun character, and here’s this person who has been stuck in this city and she has forged her own path in life to try to deal with everything that’s happened. And I’ll say that she is in obviously some sort of strange confrontation with our people, and we’ll learn a lot more about her in the episode to follow. And she becomes an important catalyst for some of the things that are to happen. [Paolo Lazaro is] wonderful. Just folded right in with the cast, is incredibly funny, but has a great dark sense of humor. And so I’m excited for people to see what she brings to this mix going forward.”
