USA Network Cancels Annual “The Purge”
USA Network has opted not to proceed with a new season of its high-profile drama series “The Purge”, says Deadline.
Based on the popular Universal movie franchise, “The Purge” was canceled after just two seasons.
“The Purge” series revolved around a 12-hour period when all crime, including murder, is legal in an altered America ruled by a totalitarian political party.
According to the site, the drama was expensive while not drawing enough eyeballs on linear television, noting that “The Purge” was a breakout in Season 1, but its linear viewership was down 50% in Season 2.
The cancellation is also said to be part of an overall programming shift at the NBCU network away from ongoing scripted series toward more live and unscripted programming, along with “eventized” scripted projects.
Film franchise creator James DeMonaco executive produced with Thomas Kelly, Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Andrew Form and Sebastien K. Lemercier.

Ralph Ineson and Corey Stoll Join ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Spinoff Series Starring Wyatt Russell
The small screen MonsterVerse is expanding with a “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” spinoff series centered on Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell), and Deadline brings us the latest casting news.
Corey Stoll (Imperfect Women, Billions), Ralph Ineson (The Witch, The Fantastic Four: First Steps), and Nyasha Hatendi (Agatha Christie’s The Seven Dials, Casual) have signed on.
Pilou Asbæk (Salem’s Lot) and Millie Brady (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) also star.
Originally announced back in December, “Obi-Wan Kenobi” showrunner and “Monarch” executive producer Joby Harold will serve as showrunner on the untitled spinoff series.
The series will follow Colonel Lee Shaw, an American operative who in 1984 went on a secret mission behind enemy lines in an attempt to stop the Soviets from unleashing a horrific new Titan big enough to destroy the U.S. and turn the tide of the Cold War.
Wyatt Russell told Collider earlier this year, “you’ve got absolutely no fucking clue what to expect. I think people are going to expect one thing and be like, ‘Holy shit, this is not what I expected.’ It’ll go deeper into Lee’s experience after he came up, and being sort of put on ice, in 1982, and then what happens after that, and why he’s needed and the mission he goes on.”
