HBO Max Series “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” Will Also Air on the Cartoon Network
We still don’t yet have a premiere date but the Gremlins franchise is soon headed back into our lives courtesy of the HBO Max series “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai,” a half-hour animated prequel series from WB Animation and Amblin TV that’s set in 1920s Shanghai and tells the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing met the young Mogwai called Gizmo.
While we wait for more, we’ve learned today via The Hollywood Reporter that “Secrets of the Mogwai” will be given a cross-platform run, also airing on the Cartoon Network.
THR reports, “The show will be part of “ACME Night,” a Sunday evening block of family-friendly movies and shows that will debut on Cartoon Network Sept. 19 and HBO Max in early 2022. Among the HBO Max titles making the jump are Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, Aquaman: King of Atlantis, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, and Batman: Caped Crusader.”

The voice cast for the Gremlins prequel series includes:
- Ming Na-Wen as Fong Wing
- BD Wong as Hon Wing
- James Hong as Grandpa Wing
- Izaac Wang as Sam Wing
- A.J. LoCascio as Gizmo
- Gabrielle Green as Elle
- Matthew Rhys as Riley Greene
“Along with teenage street thief Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.”
The series is developed, written and produced by Tze Chun.

‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ – Netflix Reveals the Real Dog Playing Scooby-Doo in Live Action Series
For the first time ever, a real dog is playing Scooby-Doo in the upcoming Netflix series “Scooby-Doo: Origins,” and the streamer has revealed a first look at the dog this week.

Maxwell Jenkins (“Lost in Space”) will play Fred, Tanner Hagen (“The Pitt”) will play Shaggy, and Abby Ryder Fortson (Ant-Man) will play Velma, joining Mckenna Grace (Scream 7) as Daphne in the upcoming live action prequel series, “Scooby-Doo: Origins.”
The new series is “a modern reimagining of the iconic mystery-solving group of teens and their very special dog. During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder.
“Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”
Josh Appelbaum (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) and Scott Rosenberg (Venom, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) are showrunners and writers.
Toby Haynes (“Andor,” “Black Mirror”) will direct the first of eight episodes, in addition to serving as an executive producer. Greg Berlanti (“Riverdale,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) will executive produce the upcoming Netflix series with Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman via Berlanti Productions and its overall deal with Warner Bros. Television.
Look for “Scooby-Doo: Origins” on Netflix in 2027.
