“Isle of the Dead” Spinoff Series from AMC Will Bring “The Walking Dead” to New York City!
In addition to “Tales of the Walking Dead” and a Daryl/Carol series, another “The Walking Dead” spinoff series has been announced today, this one titled “Isle of the Dead“!
Set in New York City, the series will center on Maggie and Negan. And yes, Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be reprising the roles from the main “TWD” series.
“Isle of the Dead sees Maggie and Negan traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.”
The six-episode “Isle of the Dead” will shamble onto AMC in 2023.
Eli Jorné (“The Walking Dead”) has been set as the showrunner.
“This is a very big day for the expanding universe we are building around The Walking Dead,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “It not only adds another compelling series to this collection, it extends our storytelling around two unforgettable characters fans have grown to love, hate or hate and then love in Maggie and Negan, brilliantly inhabited by Lauren and Jeffrey. It also lets us explore a corner of this universe located on the island of Manhattan, with an iconic skyline that takes on a very different meaning when viewed through the lens of a zombie apocalypse.”
“Eli has created a chaotic, beautiful, grimy madhouse of the dead for Negan, Maggie, and fans of the show eager to discover an unseen and insane world of the TWD Universe,” added franchise architect Scott Gimple. “Lauren and Jeffrey have always been fantastic collaborators and now, we bring that collaboration to the next level with a series that will take these characters to their limits with the world — and each other. All of us are thrilled to take you on an all new, all different TWD epic for the ages.”
The main series, meanwhile, is coming to an end later this year.
You know video game adaptations are hot when even Golden Axe is making the leap to the screen. And indeed it is, with Deadline reporting that the Sega Genesis video game franchise that debuted back in 1989 is getting an animated series at Comedy Central.
Comedy Central has given “Golden Axe” a 10-episode order, Deadline reports today.
The voice cast for the animated series from CBS Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film includes Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Danny Pudi (Mythic Quest), Lisa Gilroy (Jury Duty), Liam McIntyre (Spartacus) and Carl Tart (Grand Crew).
“Described as a hilarious and loving homage to Sega’s video game series, Golden Axe follows veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they once again battle to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder who just won’t seem to stay dead. Fortunately, this time they have the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib on their side.”
Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Joe Chandler (American Dad!) will co-write the first episode and executive produce the series, with Chandler serving as showrunner.
The original Golden Axe video game was released in 1989, followed by sequels in 1991, 1992 and 1993. The series got a modern day upgrade with Golden Axe: Beast Rider in 2008.
