“True Detective: Night Country” creator Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid) is back to steer the ship for “True Detective” Season 5, and HBO has revealed the first details today.
For starters, the new season of the hit series will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York, a long way from the chilly Ennis, Alaska setting of “True Detective: Night Country.”
HBO’s Francesca Orsi tells Deadline this afternoon, “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”
Filming on “True Detective” Season 5 will begin “in the coming months,” and Orsi additionally tells the outlet that we can expect the season to premiere sometime in 2027.

“I’m really excited about it. We have a small writers room going with Issa; she’s excited,” Orsi explains. “We just gave notes on the first two episodes, the entire season. Honestly, I can’t wait for this to go. It’s all about casting and getting this ready.”
Deadline also notes, “The new season is rumored to have three leads, two male and one female.”
“True Detective: Night Country” averaged 12.7 million total viewers per episode, which makes it the most watched season of “True Detective” in the anthology’s four-season history.
