From creator Jesse McKeown (“The Umbrella Academy”), Netflix’s sea creature series “Below” is swimming our way this October, and Entertainment Weekly has the first look.

Josh Hartnett stars in Netflix’s upcoming series “Below” alongside Charlie Heaton, Mackenzie Davis, Rohan Campbell, Ruby Stokes, Kaleb Horn, and Willow Kean.

It follows a grizzled fisherman (Josh Hartnett) who must fight to protect his family and his community when a mysterious sea creature terrorizes a remote Newfoundland town.

Entertainment Weekly previews, “Thankfully, Calvin’s not alone on his quest to confront the unknown. In an effort to keep his son Wade (Charlie Heaton) and their family safe from harm, he joins forces with marine researcher Fonda (Mackenzie Davis) to learn more about the creature that lurks below the waves and, along the way, their island’s hidden history.”

McKeown teases, “Folks here have been dealing with unexplained phenomena and tragic events for hundreds of years. Killer storms. Maritime disasters. The collapse of the cod fishery. People going hungry. Surviving the winter here can be a horror movie in and of itself. So, these strange events fit into a long history of unimaginable difficulties.”

He notes that the series is inspired by the work of Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter, two filmmaking titans who similarly inspired Apple TV’s hit horror-comedy “Widow’s Bay.”

“Below” looks to scratch a similar itch, though perhaps with a bit less comedy.

The six-episode limited series arrives on Netflix on October 8, 2026.
