‘Casper’ Live Action Series Announced for Disney+ from Producer Steven Spielberg

It was originally announced back in 2022 that friendly ghost Casper would be returning to the screen with a live action series at Peacock, but the series is now set up over at Disney+.

Deadline reports this afternoon that Casper has found a new home at Disney+, with a live action series being developed by Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston (“Goosebumps”).

Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston are writing, with Letterman directing the series. Steven Spielberg is also on board to produce the new Casper streaming series.

Deadline reports, “There are no details yet about the new Casper, described as a modern update on the classic ghost story, which is in the early stages of development. It is believed to have a dark edge to it the way Wednesday tackles the Addams Family lore.”

It’s important to note that the upcoming Casper series now in development at Disney+ is said to be a very different project than the one that had been taking shape at Peacock.

Created by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo, the cartoon character Casper memorably appeared on the big screen in 1995, that movie followed by two live-action follow-up films.

Needless to say, it’s very intriguing to imagine a darker Casper series, as the character – while a supernatural being – has always been a family-friendly presence. It’s unclear at this time just how dark the project will get, but the mention of “a dark edge” has piqued our interest.

Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
