Pennywise will return to HBO in another season of the hit horror series “IT: Welcome to Derry,” with HBO announcing today that the show has officially/finally been renewed for Season 2.
This renewal comes as no surprise given the success of the first season, but we had nevertheless been waiting for the official announcement from HBO. And the wait is thankfully now over.
“IT: Welcome to Derry” Season 2 will travel back in time to 1935.
IT of course wakes up and feeds every 27 years, so the series is tracking those cycles throughout time. The show’s first season took place in 1962, while the first IT (2017) movie was set in 1989 and Muschietti’s IT: Chapter Two (2019) jumped forward 27 years to 2016. Each cycle begins and ends with a horrific act, while Pennywise feasts on children throughout.
Deadline details this afternoon, “Set in 1935, amidst the Great Depression, Season 2 revolves around the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror.”
Brad Caleb Kane (“Crystal Lake”) will be back as the showrunner for Season 2.
Bill Skarsgård is expected to return to the screen as Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
“We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation,” said HBO’s Sarah Aubrey. “Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour.”
Producers Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti said, “Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege. The support of our partners at HBO and Warner Bros. Television is priceless. Boy do we love our jobs!”
