You know video game adaptations are hot when even Golden Axe is making the leap to the screen. And indeed it is, with the Sega Genesis video game franchise that debuted back in 1989 getting an animated series on Paramount+. Watch the official trailer down below.
“Golden Axe” premieres September 16 only on Paramount+.
The official trailer was debuted by Entertainment Weekly this morning.
In an homage to SEGA’s video game, “Golden Axe” follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder, who just won’t seem to stay dead. Their quest is complicated by Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose dream of heroism far exceeds his abilities.
Forced to work together despite their flaws, they must find a way to stop Death Adder once and for all.
Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Solar Opposites) and Joe Chandler (American Dad, Napoleon Dynamite) co-created the upcoming Paramount+ animated series.
The voice cast for the animated series from CBS Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film includes Matthew Rhys (Widow’s Bay), Danny Pudi (Mythic Quest), Lisa Gilroy (Jury Duty), Liam McIntyre (Spartacus) and Carl Tart (Grand Crew).
The original Golden Axe video game was released in 1989, followed by sequels in 1991, 1992 and 1993. The series got a modern day upgrade with Golden Axe: Beast Rider in 2008.
The animated series had previously been set up at Comedy Central.
