HBO’s “The Last of Us” is coming back for a third (and potentially final) season, and we’ve learned this week that Emmy winner John Goodman is joining the cast for Season 3.
Ian Alexander and Laura Bailey have also joined “The Last of Us” Season 3. Laura Bailey voiced Abby in the video game The Last of Us Part II, while Ian Alexander voiced Lev.
In the TV series, however, they’re both playing very different characters.
The Hollywood Reporter details, “John Goodman and Ian Alexander will play Joey and Paco, a “friendly duo” who call themselves the “Heroes of the Highway.” Laura Bailey is set to play Elizabeth, one of the leaders of a religious sect called the Seraphites.”
Season 2 picked up five years after the events of the first season, which centered on a hardened survivor smuggling humanity’s last hope out of an oppressive quarantine zone, two decades after modern civilization was decimated. Plot details for season three haven’t been revealed yet, other than that it will shift to Abby’s perspective and heavily feature the Seraphites.
Kaitlyn Dever stars as Abby, who will be the centerpiece of the upcoming season, alongside Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Isabela Merced, Gabriel Luna, and Jeffrey Wright also star.
The Season 3 cast will also include Jason Ritter, Patrick Wilson, Clea DuVall, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Ariella Barer, Tati Gabrielle, and Spencer Lord.
The Last of Us video game co-creator Neil Druckmann stepped down as co-showrunner of the series last year, leaving Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”) as the sole showrunner for Season 3.
We expect “The Last of Us” Season 3 sometime in 2027.
