Conan The Barbarian Returns in Funcom’s Real-Time Strategy Game ‘Conan Unconquered’

Published

on

While The Legend of Conan failed to materialize, fans of the series can at least look towards a new video game in the form of Conan Unconquered from Funcom and developer Petroglyph Games (the same guys who worked on Star Wars: Empire at War and Command & Conquer). Unlike previous games based on Robert E. Howard’s classic series, this new game will in fact be a real-time strategy game.

Set for release between April and June 2019 on Steam, the game will be set within the Hyborian Age and in the Conan universe. The game will allow for both single-player and two-player co-op “for a truly unique, shared multiplayer experience.” Players will share a base, but both can freely construct new buildings and jointly amass an army to meet an objective.

Taking a cue from Numantian Games’ They Are Billions, players will have to face “wave after wave of increasingly more difficult enemies” as they build and manage their stronghold. Along the way, players will unlock powerful units (including Conan himself) that are equipped with special abilities. In addition, you’ll also uncover unique artifacts to equip these units with even more power.

Other unique aspects include disease that can spread from deceased soldiers to your own men, randomly generated maps, and even the ability to call upon the gods for help in defeating an opposing army and more. You can check out the rest of the content (as well as some screenshots) on the game’s Steam page.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
