Like many Dark Souls fans, you’ve probably cut your teeth (and pulled out your hair) while playing From Software’s PlayStation 3 precursor in Demon’s Souls. And while the main Dark Souls series has seen its success result in PlayStation 4 remasters, Demon’s Souls is left out of the fun. And seeing as the game turns the big 10 this year (why am I so old?), the question of why the game hasn’t received a remaster inevitably comes up.
When Game Informer asked From Software president Hidetaka Miyazaki about a possible remaster of Demon’s Souls, he admitted that it wasn’t something that he was personally interested in doing. “It’s like when you write – when you’re younger, you look back on [previous work] and you think ‘Oh, goodness what was I thinking,’” Miyazaki said. “It’s not that I’m embarrassed, I just don’t like to look at my previous works.”
Also, the fact that Sony holds the rights to the game is a big obstacle.
Regardless of his personal interest, should the opportunity arise, Miyazaki is not opposed to another studio handling the remaster, provided that it’s done right.
“If it was a studio that really loved the original work and really put their heart and soul into realizing it again, then that’s something I would enjoy. But it’s really complicated because I have these fond memories. Thinking about the idea of a remaster gives me kind of butterflies in my stomach and makes me a little nervous, so it’s complicated. But I understand there are many users and many players and fans out there who really love Demon’s, so if that’s something they could accomplish with a studio that loved the work, then yeah, I’d be okay with that.”
