[GDC 2019] ‘Mutant Year Zero’ to Head to The Nintendo Switch June 25

Published

Funcom and The Bearded Ladies Consulting’s turn-based strategy game Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden (which we reviewed here) will be headed to the Nintendo Switch this summer. The news came during Epic Games’ GDC Keynote, which also included the announcement that a physical Deluxe Edition will be release for the game.

The Nintendo Switch version of the game will be landing on June 25, and will include the upcoming DLC expansion for the game at launch, which the developers hope to reveal more about in the near future. If you’ve already snagged the game on PC, PS4, or Xbox One, you’ll have to purchase the DLC separately or pick up Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden Deluxe Edition at retail. This physical release is also happening on June 25, and will set you back $39.99USD.

“Ever since we started working on this game, we have always felt it would be a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch,” said Haraldur Thormundsson of The Bearded Ladies Consulting. “The game lends itself really well to the Switch controls and the pacing of the tactical turn-based combat is perfect for an on-the-go, handheld console.”

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is currently available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
