Romero’s Spiritual Successor to ‘DOOM’ in ‘SIGIL’ is Finally Available

Published

on

It took its sweet time, but at least John Romero’s SIGIL arrived sooner than what happened with Daikatana. Romero’s “unofficial spiritual successor” to the fourth episode of Ultimate DOOM is now available to download for free, after the limited physical editions from Limited Run Games finally made their way out to those lucky fans who managed to snag them.

SIGIL comprises nine new levels for the original DOOM, with each containing “more detail” than the levels in episodes 1-4. Romero says the levels should feel like they “belong in the original game as if they were a true fifth episode”. They’re playable in singleplayer, co-op and deathmatch.

The story directly follows Episode 4, with Earth now overrun with demons, and it’s your job to teleport to Hell and confront the Satanic source of it all before returning to Earth.

The Megawad is completely free (if you don’t mind a MIDI soundtrack), but you can also spend €6.66 (roughly $7.50/£6) on a version with a metal soundtrack from guitarist Buckethead (which is available on Romero Games). You’ll also require the full version of Ultimate DOOM in order to play it (which you can easily snag on Steam or GOG.com).

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
