New Dev Diary Explores Environments of ‘Minecraft Dungeons’

Published

on

Microsoft have posted a new video for their upcoming Diablo-esque dungeon-crawler set in the Minecraft universe, Minecraft Dungeons. The developer diary focuses on the game’s environments, which are obviously reminiscent of the original Minecraft, but obviously taken towards a darker setting.

As detailed in the video, game designer Pontus Hammarberg talks about how the levels in Minecraft Dungeons are procedurally generated. “The way that we’ve married procedural generation with rewarding gameplay is to design sort of like puzzle pieces that we can then tell the engine to arrange for us, either in a way that we specifically tell us to do, or in a way that is more random.”

However, unlike Diablo (which has used procedurally-generated environments since the beginning), the randomness isn’t quite to that extent. “What procedural generation doesn’t take into account is pacing, what kind of encounters you will have, how the level plays in general, so you have to strike a good mix between procedural generation and crafted content,” says level designer Christian Berg.

Minecraft Dungeons is set for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC April 2020.

Available now digitally on the Switch 2, for those fans who want that something extra in regards to Bloober Team’s cyberpunk horror title Observer, Meridiem has the answer, announcing that it will publish and distribute a physical edition of Observer System Redux – Limited Edition for the Nintendo Switch 2. Set for release on October 30, you can pre-order the game now.

In addition to being on a physical cart, Observer System Redux – Limited Edition will include a special case, a lenticular 3D postcard, in-game ad cards and digital content.

Originally released back in 2019, Observer received an upgraded and expanded System Redux version the next year. Starring the late Rutger Hauer, the year is 2084. The future has turned out much darker than anyone could imagine. First, there was the Nanophage. A digital plague that killed thousands upon thousands of those who chose to augment their minds and bodies. Then came the War, leaving both the West and the East decimated and shattered. With no one left to seize power, corporations took over and forged their own crooked empires.

You are an Observer – a tool of corporate oppression. Feared and despised, you hack into the darkest corners of your suspects’ minds. You creep into their dreams, expose their fears, and extract whatever your investigation may require.

Observer System Redux is also available for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series.
