Capcom: ‘Resident Evil Village’ Villainess Lady Dimitrescu Inspired by Morticia Addams, Elizabeth Báthory

Once again, people still can’t get enough of Resident Evil Village‘s Lady Dimitrescu. Amongst the various fanworks and cosplays, Capcom has gotten in on the fun, as well. They’ve again dropped more info on the tall vampire lady, courtesy of Village‘s art director, Tomonori Takano.

In an interview with IGN, Takano delves into the design and origins of the creation of Resident Evil‘s latest antagonist, including the revelation that Lady Dimitrescu was inspired by The Addams Family‘s Morticia Addams and Elizabeth Báthory.

“In the early stages of planning, we decided on going with [a] castle and vampires motifs,” according to Takano. “However, we did not want to be constrained by how vampires have been portrayed in various forms of popular entertainment.”

Takano elaborates, saying that Capcom went with the concept of a “bewitching vampire”, inspired by Anjelica Huston’s Morticia Addams, 16th century serial killer Elizabeth Báthory and Japanese urban legend, Hasshaku-sama.

It’s not the first time Báthory has been used to inspire video game characters, as the Blood Countess also served as inspiration for Castlevania Bloodlines‘ antagonist, Elizabeth Bartley. More recently, Báthory also inspired Bloodless from Bloodstained: Ritual of The Night.

As for the Hasshaku-sama, it arose as an urban legend from the realms of 2chan. She’s said to be a monster who stood around eight feet tall, wears a long white dress and a wide-brimmed hat, and preys on young men.

“I don’t think anyone [on the team] could have predicted how wonderfully fans have reacted to Lady Dimitrescu,” Takano adds. “Personally, I was particularly struck by comments like, ‘I want to be chased by her.'”

Resident Evil Village arrives May 7 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC.

Remember back in 2022 when developer Survios had announced that they were teaming up with 20th Century Games to develop a new Alien title? Well seeing as it’s Alien Day, Survios has announced their brand-new VR title, Alien: Rogue Incursion. Coming “Holiday 2024” to the PlayStation VR2, SteamVR, and Quest 3, Rogue Incursion will feature an original story that “fully surrounds players within the terrors of the Alien universe”.

Details on the game are light at the moment, but the official site describes the upcoming title as being “designed by Alien fans for Alien fans”, with Survios aiming to craft a “technically advanced, and frightfully immersive Alien virtual reality game.”

Seeing as Alien: Isolation never got official VR support when it was released, this is obviously a welcome announcement. In the meantime, if you’re keen to experience an Alien game in VR, you can always check out the fan-made mod for Alien: Isolation by Nibre_, which allows both the Steam and Epic Games Store version of Alien: Isolation to be played using the Oculus.

And speaking of Alien: Isolation, as you might expect, it’s got a hefty 80% discount going on at the moment on Steam until May 1. So if you still haven’t grabbed it after all these years, this is as good a time as any.
