[Gamescom 2022] More Info Revealed for ‘Alone in the Dark’ Remake, Including a Playable Demo! [Video]

After the big announcement a few weeks ago, you’re probably itching to find out more about THQ Nordic and Pieces Interactive’s remake of Alone in the Dark. Lucky for us, IGN sat down with Game Director Michael Hedberg to talk about how his team is bringing the game back for a modern audience. On top of that, VideoGamer also snagged a bit of info on Pieces Interactive’s plans, including a playable teaser!

As mentioned when the remake was announced, the story has been penned by Hedberg, who also wrote the story for SOMA and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. For AitD, Hedberg combines elements from all three of the original games, while at the same time charting a new direction. Hedberg studied the original games and in order to come up with what the original developer’s creative intentions were when developing his new story.

AitD’s scenarios take a cue from Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 remake, whereby selecting to play as either Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood results in the character who you didn’t choose becoming an NPC in the story. And speaking of RE2, the devs played with the idea of using a fixed camera perspective as in the original trilogy, but opted to go with RE2‘s over-the-shoulder gameplay to encourage the player to investigate their surroundings, and to better relate to their character.

The similarities with RE2 end there, as AitD will adhere more to traditional Survival Horror conventions, meaning less powerful items and less gunplay throughout the game, with a focus on conserving ammo and “desperate combat”. The Derceto manor has subsequently been redesigned to be “more realistic”, with expanded areas and different architecture. The whole game will take approximately 12 hours to complete.

Finally, the game’s Eldritch monsters will be designed by Guillermo Del Toro collaborator Guy Davis, with Jason Köhnen providing the game’s doom jazz score.

Oh, and about that demo? The game’s prologue was made playable to those attending Gamescom. Called Grace in the Dark, players assume the role of Grace (an NPC in the main game), with the whole demo functioning as a prelude to the main game. Best of all, it’ll be made available to the public at a later date.

The Alone in the Dark remake is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam.

We’ll be waiting a little while longer for developer Studio Cut to Bits’ gothic Metroidvania Venture to the Vile. Originally slated to launch on PC via Steam on May 7, the game has now been pushed a couple of weeks to May 22. The PlayStation release of Venture to the Vile is still expected later this year.

In a press release, Venture to the Vile producer Masao Kobayashi explains the decision to delay the release, stating that while Studio Cut to Bits is made up of industry veterans, this is the first time that the team has released a game as indie developers. As such, the team encountered a few hurdles leading up to the original release date.

“We all love Venture to the Vile and want to make sure we are delivering the best possible game we can for our players. For this reason, we have decided to delay our game by two weeks. I’m sorry to those who have been anticipating our game but I assure you it is going to be worth the wait.”

Venture to the Vile centres on the town of Rainybrook, where an unknown darkness is taking over, transforming anything and anyone it touches. Fortunately for you, you seem to be unaffected by this presence. However, your friend Ella is nowhere to be seen. You must brave the horrors and find her.
