New Documentary Looks at Red Barrels’ Development of ‘The Outlast Trials’ [Video]

Ahead of Red Barrels dropping a new Early Access update for The Outlast Trials (and on the heels of a tie-in comic book series), we’ve gotten a making-of documentary, courtesy of Red Barrels and The Escapist. Available to watch now, “Outlast: The Challenges of Trials” aims to give an insight to the studio’s first experience in creating a multiplayer horror game.

The half-hour documentary features members of the Red Barrels team from their studio in Montreal, giving fans a peek into the developer’s world of creativity, challenges, and triumphs when it came to creating The Outlast Trials. “After Outlast 2, we seriously considered making something completely different,” says Red Barrels co-founder Phillipe Morin, who admits that the team were “fed up” after the game’s release. “We took some time off, and eventually, the challenge to make something multiplayer while still making an Outlast game felt like a nice compromise between a new challenge and still leveraging our IP.”

Currently in Early Access on Steam and the Epic Games Store, The Outlast Trials is a brand new take on the acclaimed Outlast survival horror series, set in the same terrifying universe as the previous titles, only this time you can choose to play on your own or with friends in a team of up to four people.

Set in the height of the Cold War era, players take on the role of test subjects abducted by the shadowy Murkoff Corporation. Imprisoned in a secret Murkoff facility, players are thrust into a series of physical and mental ordeals, tormented by iconic characters, and challenged alone or in teams to survive with their sanity intact.

The Outlast Trials is expected to arrive on PlayStation and Xbox in 2024, with crossplay across consoles and PC.

Upcoming “Unholy Alliance” Update for ‘Cult of the Lamb’ Adds Local Co-op and More [Teaser]

Published

Cult of the Lamb players will be getting more free goodies later this summer with the Unholy Alliance update. Coming August 12, the update introduces a brand new playable character in the Goat, which coincides with the game allowing local co-op.

With the Unholy Alliance update, the entire Cult of the Lamb campaign will be playable in local co-op. Players will also be able to enjoy special 2-player versions of existing mini-games, such as Fishing and Knucklebones, as well as choose from a selection of weapons, tarot cards, curses, and corrupted relics as your cooperative crusades progress.

The Lamb and Goat can also swap weapons, deal extra damage when fighting back to back, and even deliver a critical hit when their attacks are in sync. Good news for those who prefer to stay alone in their corner: they will be able to benefit from various new powers.

In addition to the addition of cooperative play, the Unholy Alliance expansion adds several tarot cards, relics, buildings, fleeces, character traits and quests, as well as the addition of new secrets to discover.

More information on the update will be released as the launch date creeps closer. Cult of The Lamb is available now on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and the Nintendo Switch.
