Rumour: ‘Resident Evil Zero’ Remake and Film Adaptation Reportedly in Development
Noted Resident Evil leaker AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golem is back with another interesting set of rumours, this time involving Resident Evil Zero. Not only is there renewed speculation of a remake of the 2002 GameCube title, but also a potential film adaptation from Screen Gems/Constantin Films.
As always, take these bits with your usual dose of sodium chloride.
Taking to X, Dusk Golem mentions that it is his speculation that with Screen Gems/Constantin Films having a contract that in order to retain the rights to Resident Evil for films, they would need to crank out a film every five years. The previous film was 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (which didn’t exactly set the box office on fire), meaning that the next film would need to be released before fiscal year 2026.
Which brings us to the next bit of speculation in that the film, which is rumoured to be directed by Zach Cregger (Barbarian), will be Resident Evil Zero, which will focus on Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen and their discovery of the origins of the T-Virus. That all in turn leads to the successor for the Nintendo Switch, which is rumoured to be releasing next year. Dusk Golem feels that Capcom will try to strike an exclusivity deal with Nintendo with a remake of RE0, similar to what Sony has done with past titles that eventually saw release on other consoles.
This feeds into previous rumours involving Resident Evil Zero being one of the titles in the series that Capcom is currently remaking.
The whole purpose of this, as Dusk Golem says, is to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary: Tying the “beginning of the saga” with a film adaptation and a remake to the present, and the eventual release of Resident Evil 9, which (surprise!) is speculated to be coming in 2026.
Again, all of this is pure speculation, and none of this has been confirmed by Capcom. Still, it’s kind of fun to think of what Capcom will do. Plus, Resident Evil Zero does deserve to get a bit of redemption after 20+ years.
Thanks to Twisted Voxel for spotting this one.
