For all of LJN’s inconsistent video game adaptations, their take on Jaws for the Nintendo Entertainment System was actually one of their better efforts. And seeing as this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Steven Spielberg classic, Limited Run Games is capitalizing on it by announcing pre-orders for their physical editions of Jaws: Retro Edition for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5.
This isn’t just the original NES game stuck on a disc or cartridge. While the original version is included (with the modern benefit of save states and the ability to rewind gameplay), there’s also the Enhanced version. This version includes a “massively expanded” multi-chapter adventure filled with nods and homages to all four Jaws films, new quests and objectives, new abilities and weapons for your boat and diver, more challenging enemies, and a more fleshed-out version of the original NES game’s role-playing elements.
Kicking off on December 19 and running through January 18, Jaws: Retro Edition will be available in two physical editions:
Standard (PS5/Switch) – $34.99
- Physical copy of the game
- 8-Page Booklet

The Bigger Boat Edition (PS5/Switch) – $99.99
- Physical copy of the game
- Everything included in the Retro Edition of the game
- NES-inspired box
- Game Soundtrack by Shinichi Sakamoto on a physically pressed CD
- Enamel pin
- Keychain
- Pixelated Shark Lamp

For those who’ve never played the original, Jaws plays a bit loose with the original film as its inspiration. Players are tasked to kill the eponymous great white, but in order to do so, you must build up your speargun’s power. To do that, you sail around until you are randomly hit by something, which will then switch to you scuba diving to destroy jellyfish, sea rays, and mini-sharks. Collecting conch shells from fallen foes will allow you to increase your speargun’s power. Eventually, after tracking Jaws, you’ll face off against him, where you must drain his health before ultimately ramming him with your ship to finally sink him.
