Fans of Maniac Mansion‘s spiritual successor in Terrible Toybox’s 2017 point-and-click adventure title Thimbleweed Park should get ready, as the developer has announced a sequel! Thimbleweed Park 2 will launch for PC via Steam in 2028. Agents Ray and Reyes are back in this “not really a sequel, not really a prequel” follow-up, which is promising to be “more Thimbleweed Park than ever.”
As mentioned, Agents Ray and Reyes return from the previous game, this time in order to investigate (or are they?) a dead body at the Edmund Mansion. But, as fans of the original game might expect, a dead body will be the least of their problems.
In a point-and-click spoof of a classic whodunit, everyone in the Mansion is a suspect and the murderer will be confronted by our detectives. If you can find them. And it’s not the butler.
Currently, you can keep track of the game’s development from the official site, where co-creator Ron Gilbert recently posted the first dev blog entry for Thimbleweed Park 2. Gilbert hopes to be posting updates on production “at least once a week”, and with no spoilers.
And in keeping with the “old school” flavour, Gilbert has mused that the team wants to do Big Box versions of the game for PC, but that decision is still a ways away. And in addition to Steam, the game will be available on GOG for Mac, Windows and Linux. For console gamers, the game will also be available for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series and PlayStation 5.
And unlike the previous game, the devs won’t be turning to Kickstarter for funding, as Thimbleweed Park 2 is already funded. However, they are looking at doing “fun things” like the phonebook and other goodies at some point.
Thimbleweed Park is available on Steam and GOG, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch.
