If you watched The Horror Game Awards Showcase earlier this year, you probably caught developer Ctrl Freak’s upcoming first-person survival horror game, Lurking. Planned for release later this year on Steam, you can get a sense of what to expect with the recently-released demo, which is actually a more polished version of the demo that was originally released on the game’s itch.io page.
Lurking sees you taking care of your pet spiders. However, just what happens when your pets grow out of control… and begin lurking in the hallways of your apartment building? You’ll need to stay low, stay quiet, and stick to the shadows. If you can keep it together, you might be able to find a way out.
You’re not defenseless against your former pets. You’ll need to utilize improvised, homemade weapons to fight back against these eight-legged freaks in order to survive. However, that’s only part of the problem, as you’ll need to find keys and tools in order to progress through the building. What you do, and how you do it, will lead to one of the game’s multiple endings.
The spiders that lurk the hallways feature “dynamic” behavior that reacts to your actions, coupled with a procedural animation system for “highly realistic spider movement” for you arachnid lovers (and haters). It’s all presented in PSX-inspired pixelated visuals to complete the “modern horror atmosphere”.
