The Hellraiser franchise hasn’t always had the direct involvement of creator Clive Barker, and it’s fair to say that the franchise has suffered without Barker in control. But the upcoming video game is a little different, with Clive Barker’s name directly featured in the title. It’s called Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival, and it’s headed our way this Halloween season.
But how involved was Clive Barker in the upcoming Hellraiser: Revival?
Saber Interactive’s narrative director Antony De Fault tells Deadline in a new chat, “Clive was very easy to work with. He’s a true artist, so he knew what we needed to do to understand the spirit of Hellraiser. But he also knew that he wasn’t going to be able to puppeteer us from afar, that that wasn’t going to produce good art. He just needed to make sure that we understood the spirit of the series, and then he let us rip. And we made the game with that spirit and focused through the prism of ourselves as opposed to him, and he supported us in that.”
“So, he didn’t challenge any major creative decisions or anything like that,” De Fault explains. “He gave us a few pointers on the representation of the labyrinth, some aesthetic choices, and stuff like that, but it was truly minimally invasive. It was a really nice relationship.”
