‘Resident Evil Requiem’ Writer Teases Oswell E. Spencer Story Arc in Upcoming DLC

Resident Evil Requiem DLC Spencer

If you’ve been waiting for tidbits on the story DLC for Resident Evil Requiem, writer Haris Orkin has spilled a bit of info for those itching to get back into the game. Speaking at the Meadowlark Comic Con earlier this summer, Orkin revealed that Capcom has plans to focus on Oswell E. Spencer in the upcoming DLC, which is still in development.

Orkin, whose work includes several video games (including Dying Light: The Beast and the Castlevania chapter for Dead by Daylight), had revealed back in February that he had collaborated with Capcom on Requiem for the past two years.

Without going into spoiler territory, Spencer is portrayed differently in Requiem than in previous entries. Rather than the ruthless elitist with ambitions of immortality, Spencer appears to receive a bit of a redemption arc. It’s that arc that Haris is aiming to explore.

In the interview, Orkin explains the way he writes villains. Like many actors who portray villainous characters, Haris takes the route of the villain thinking that what they do is right. According to Orkin, the upcoming DLC will aim to make players understand that approach.

“We have an arc for Spencer in Requiem,” Orkin said. “Where you understand [that approach] more. And then in the DLC you will understand it even further. I probably shouldn’t say that, but yeah.”

That’s an especially exciting revelation for Requiem fans, as this feels poised to address some lingering questions regarding Spencer’s change of heart and Grace Ashcroft’s role in his cloning experimentations.

Elsewhere, when asked about what character he has written that was the closest to him, Haris states that it’s actually Grace. “If I was confronted with the horrors she’s confronted with, that’s exactly how I would react.”

Staying with Grace, Orkin talked about his approach to writing her, stating that he decided to put her on the autism spectrum. “She’s an analyst. She’s really an expert at figuring out clues, but she’s not great at dealing with people. It was all part of creating that character.”

Resident Evil Requiem, which has now surpassed over 8 million units sold, is available for the Nintendo Switch 2, PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and the Xbox Series.
