What Happened to Movie Posters?

The horror movie poster used to be something amazing, something that drew us in with promises of mayhem, carnage, and terror. Think of The Thing, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th as examples. They crafted something unique and fascinating, something that made passerby stop and investigate further. They are also examples of posters that could be hung on home walls and still be considered art.

But somewhere along the way, Hollywood got lazy and the movie poster art faded away into Photoshop obscurity, resulting in the same rehashed templates being used over and over again. And we know it. We all see it. A poster comes out and instead of us thinking, “Wow! I’m really into that!” we scratch out heads and wonder, “Where have I seen that before?”

If you’ve felt that way but don’t understand the science behind it, the below video from GoodBadFlicks helps explain why that is.

What are some of your favorite movie posters in general? Tell us in the comments!
