A big draw for us horror fans is when a horror movie features practical FX. We love seeing our heroes (and our villains) get absolutely soaked in gallons of fake blood and wade through intestines, limbs, and assorted viscera. It’s also a delight to see monsters that actually look like they could attack us. Just think of the creatures from The Descent or the transformations in The Thing. While the latter didn’t have the technology to create anything similar (like its 2011 prequel did), the former had those tools at its disposal and instead avoided the temptation, which resulted in creatures that the actresses had to interact with and were genuinely surprised and terrified by.
I bring all this up because the Academy Awards have been celebrating the Best VFX of films for a long time and some truly amazing films have been selected over the years as the winners. But rather than take my word for it, why not see for yourself with this handy video that goes through every winner there’s been!
Which of these movies do you think has had the greatest impact on how you enjoy practical FX?
