First published in September 1993, R.L. Stine’s The Haunted Mask is easily the most well-known and iconic book in the entire Goosebumps series. The Halloween-set tale of a young girl who puts on a scary mask and can’t take it off was adapted for the small screen in October 1995, and Carly Beth (and her mask) made a very brief appearance in the Goosebumps movie.
Now, the story has been turned into a short film by a group of fans!
YouTube channel SecondLifePro just recently remade The Haunted Mask in their own vision, and they even went ahead and recreated the opening title sequence from the ’90s TV series. The two-part short centers on a teenage Carly Beth, who searches for the perfect Halloween costume to get revenge on two school bullies.
This fan short is admittedly plagued by a whole lot of amateur acting, but it’s pretty nice to see that the Goosebumps stories are still circulating around out there in the world. That The Haunted Mask has spawned a fan film over 20 years after its initial publication is a real testament to the enduring popularity of Stine’s greatest creation.
