[Kill of the Week] Dance Club Massacre in ‘The Collection’

[Kill of the Week] Dance Club Massacre in ‘The Collection’

Every week, we spotlight a kill that we just can’t get enough of. This is Kill of the Week.

If there was any horror film released in the last decade that deserved its own long-running franchise, one could argue that The Collector was that film. The movie, which began its life as the script for a Saw prequel, introduced a new icon with the titular Collector, a masked maniac who brutally maims, murders and, well, collects his victims.

While it didn’t quite spawn a franchise, The Collector did get one sequel in 2012, The Collection. The best way I can describe The Collection is that it is to The Collector what Aliens is to Alien. Not only is the general plot very similar, with the survivor of the first film being thrust back into their nightmare, but so too is the overall approach of the sequel, which is bigger and more action packed. While The Collector is an intense and confined horror flick, The Collection is played more for the crazy spectacle of it all.

And that gory spectacle begins with the opening scene, which sees the Collector using one of his nasty traps to turn the floor of a dance club into a human meat grinder. When a young woman at the club frees Josh Stewart’s Arkin from one of the Collector’s red trunks, she unknowingly triggers the death blades, which slice and dice dozens of teens.

Take that, Ghost Ship!

I wish they’d blood hurry up and announce The Collected!
While they’re at it, Laid To Rest 3 (I’d call it Deadbox : Laid To Rest 3)
And sod it, I’m being greedy here, Splinter2 (with the 2 flipped around to look like an S)

    • Travis Ignaffo

I think Laid to Rest 3 has begun filming its called Laid to Rest 3: Exhumed or something like that i read.

    • Hardcore F’n Mudd

I bloody loved Chromeskull. Best gore I’ve ever seen in any film. Incredible effects.
Second film was a step backwards though.

Agree 100% about Collector 3! Still waiting!!

      • Saturn

Yeah, the second Chromeskull movie wasn’t as good as the first, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
People often say “oh, we need new horror icons, people like Freddy/Michael/Jason et al are from the 1980’s (Myers 1970’s) – we need something new!” but when you stop and think about it, we already have some newer characters who could potentially – if handled properly – step up to the plate. Victor Crowley being one, and of course Chromeskull and The Collector.

        • gary41172

According to the director, shooting was supposed to start this past Dec. for Laid To Rest:Exhumed 🙂

        • Nahuel Benvenuto

the first Chromeskull was not a good movie at all

          • Necro

Really? Respected of course! Wow! But ok that’s what makes the genre great.

        • Kristoffer Groves

          Mick Taylor!

        • dsxy

Nothing wrong wrong with new horror icons, chrome (that kill with the guy getting stabbed in the face with the dagger was awesome!), collector are 2 that could be fantastic…. I was a big fan of the first Hatchet film but kinda felt the sequels were kinda shit and a real missed opportunity.

          • Saturn

I agree that the first Hatchet was the best of the original trilogy, but it does seem that quite a lot of people who’ve seen Victor Crowley reckon it’s the best of the bunch. I’m looking forward to that bad boy.

          • dsxy

I will have to check it out then!

I raise my hand for Splinter2. Splinter is a little gem of a film.

      • Necro

Fantastic mention! Another great film that’s overlooked constantly. As far as a sequel for that though……….

      • J Jett

        i freaking love SPLINTER!

    • Necro

So what ‘Splinter2’ as in plural? ‘The Collected’ – love it, fitting name, and hmmm……..’Deadbox: Laid to Rest 3′, why that title? Sounds like it would fit better with ‘The Collector’ since he uses the trunk. I’m not taking shots at you, I’m seriously not! Just curious is all.

      • Saturn

Splinter2 – yes, the 2 flipped around to look like an S so the sequel is Splinters.

The Collected – I can’t take credit for that name, that’s the name that the guy who made the first 2 claimed was going to be the name of the 3rd movie.

Deadbox : Laid To Rest 3 – That’s just a joke based around the first movie, remember the woman who was in the coffin described it as “a dead box”.

        • J Jett

now a SPLINTER sequel makes sense since those splinter spore things were clearly still spreading. i would love a sequel to that film. a 3rd film in THE COLLECTOR franchise would suck if it undoes the perfect ending from THE COLLECTION.

    • J Jett

NOOOOOOOOOO! i don’t want the perfect ending of THE COLLECTION ruined. 🙂

  • Brey Compton Arriaga

    This movie was awesome!!! <3

  • Jay Bennett

Yeah, these remain a guilty pleasure of mine

  • J Jett

this sequel had one of THE most satisfying, awesome endings ever. i don’t even want a 3rd film because it would just mess up the perfect ending of THE COLLECTION. this mass murder scene was insane, horrific and awesome all at the same time.

  • Shane

Collector and collection was the shit…..now if dude would finally make the collected and wrap up the franchise

    • Silhouetters

The Collectoring: The Revenge coming 2019

      • Shane

Are you just bullshitting or are you serious?

        • Adam Clifton

          lol he’s joking

          • Shane

            Oh! Ok lol

        • Silhouetters

          It’s obviously a joke dude.

    • Necro

I agree Shane! BUT ONLY if Marcus Dunstan does it, the director of the first two films.

  • gary41172

Now I loved The Collection! Thought it was every bit as good as The Collector! That dance club opening was a horror fans wet dream 🙂 I am all for a third from this team!

  • RJ MacReady

I rented this movie not knowing a thing about it. This scene was unexpected and amazing…although years later it’s the only thing I remember from the film.

  • Rocky

These films are excellent: both so under rated. and very nasty. It’s a shame they both went under the radar – hope the third one is made.

  • Poland626

It was cool but completely took me out of the scene do to just how over the top it was. All those deaths and like, not one fbi manhunt for this guy by the end? He just…you know if you saw it, but still……

  • Silhouetters

    Blocked in the UK

    *hangs self*

  • That scene is excellent! I have no doubts how The Collection and The Collector are both great horror movies.

  • lucas

why does there NEED to be countless sequels to the first film? this sequel had one of THE most satisfying, awesome endings ever. i don’t even want a 3rd film because it would just mess up the perfect ending of THE COLLECTION. there’s no way in hell the killer was going to survive/escape from Josh Stewart’s Arkin character at the end of the film

    • J Jett

      • Necro

        WTF? The exact same comment?!

        • J Jett

yeah, for some bizarre reason lucas copy & pasted my initial comment from below. so i just returned the favor. 🙂

          • Necro

Yeah I was like am I seeing this right? Ok.

      • MrX13

I thought it ended perfectly too. I love how Arkin was able to catch him and put him in his lockerbox, whatever you call it. It was great ending.

Should a third come from it, it better be done right. I would watch it but I don’t really want it

  • Necro

Yeah this particular scene was fantastic! I was so stoked when I found out that there was going to be a second ‘Collector’ film. I would love to see a 3rd film in this franchise, but only if it’s done right! That being said only if Marcus Dunstan would be at the helm, I wouldn’t want to see another director, also hopefully Juan Fernandez would come back to play ‘The Collector’ his mannerisms were much better than Randall Archer’s. Ok John, now you MUST honor ‘Chromeskull’ from the ‘Laid to Rest’ films at some point in kill of the week. Two franchises that really get no love, well they do but not like they should. Personally I think both of these franchises are some of the best to come out in a long time!

    • MrX13

A third only if done right but still think it ended perfectly with the collector getting caught by Arkin.

As for Laid To Rest, those two films are great just as well and need just as much love.

      • Necro

Yeah as much as I would like to see a 3rd ‘Collector’ film I’m content with it being left alone as it stands. I think the way it ended really says that. Now as far as ‘Chromeskull’ that’s a whole different story. *SPOILER ALERT* I mean at the end of part 2 he’s alive and now in Hollywood ready to tear that fucking place apart! According to someone on here there’s a 3rd film already in progress, apparently on dreadcentral.com. I haven’t checked yet but I’m about to.

      • Necro

Yep X it’s official, ‘Laid to Rest: Exhumed’ is really happening! The director again is Robert Hall and he said this is going to be the “biggest, baddest, and bloodiest” of them all so far. He even went on to say that he “guarantees this one will be if not THE goriest, one of the goriest films of all time!” I gotta say I’ve heard numerous directors lay claim to that statement many times about their films, but for some reason I believe him, those first 2 films were absolutely brutal! And the best part of this for me is that Nick Principe is back playing ‘Chromeskull’ once again! YESSSS!! Also the same FX team is back to bring more practical FX gore and brutality to the screen! Good news huh?!

  • CalUni

That was good and nasty! How no one noticed that contraption above them… but lots of fun. I still prefer the Ghost Ship dancing massacre, it was built up better and more playful but never knew about this and definitely deserving its place in the kill of the week hall of fame.

Okay, got me. Love this stuff. Like the Jigsaw murders (can’t speak for the film of that name, just the Saw franchise), like the wild rides of Final Destination, I always marvel at this kind of thing.

Of course, I want a horror franchise built around the contractors and sub-contractors that have to be brought in to build these mad machines…

  • Kristoffer Groves

I love the Collector soooo much. He’s the best slasher since Jason Voorhees.

  • dsxy

First was excellent, so was the second, both had great endings – if a 3rd could deliver the same or better quality, then bring it on.

Don’t really understand the comments about never needing a sequel, lots of potential within this world.

    • MrX13

Not sure how they would go about a third since The Collector was caught by Arkin at the end. But it would be nice to see a new one if the story is done right.

      • dsxy

Honestly, I have no idea but both Arkin and the Collector proved to be pretty resourceful. As long as it’s done better than something like the descent

  • MrX13

First time seeing that scene was fantastic! That was a lot better than Ghost Ship! The Collector/Collection movies are the best. Kind of wish for a third but it ended perfectly.

  • J Jett

gorgeous yes but a horrible actress as well.

  • What a way to introduce the collector sequel! Right away, you know his intent. The Collector is like a mix of Jason Vorhees and Jigsaw. A slasher who truly loves his traps. I still remember that acid on the floor and the fish hooks hanging from the ceiling.
