This year’s Academy Awards are particularly exciting for genre fans such as ourselves, as both Get Out and The Shape of Water are up for numerous awards. Most importantly, they’re both nominated for Best Picture, which is needless to say an accomplishment that’s incredibly rare for horror movies and/or creature features such as them.
Even rarer are genre wins… rare, but certainly not impossible.
Over the years, a handful of horror films actually have WON Academy Awards. To date, The Silence of the Lambs is sadly the only horror movie to take home the Best Picture statue, but other genre gems such as An American Werewolf in London, The Fly, The Exorcist and Jaws have exited the ceremony with those prestigious golden statues.
