For those old-school NES gamers, you probably remember Activision’s Ghostbusters video game. Notorious for its questionable graphics, spotty translation and frustrating gameplay, if you’ve seen the AVGN’s review, you know what to expect. However, much like the 2009 game, and thanks to a group of dedicated fans, it’s been given a remaster. And it’s not just in the graphics department, either. It’s actually playable!
Okay, so it’s more of a romhack than a remaster. NESRocks’ The Real Ghostbusters Remastered as it’s called uses sprites from the PAL/Japanese version of The New Ghostbusters 2 (which again, is superior to the game North American fans got when Ghostbusters 2 was released), as well as having the majority of the graphics being overhauled. The big thing of course is the gameplay, which has been reworked and rebalanced with better controls, and numerous bug fixes.
You can head over to NESRocks’ website for more info on the hack, as well as instructions on how to implement it. Be sure that you have an original copy of the game itself to avoid the, erm, legal issues.
