Warner Bros. was caught off guard with the popularity of Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn when she first graced the big screen in Suicide Squad. So much so that they retooled the film to included more footage of her and Jared Leto’s Joker. While Leto has been excommunicado in the retooled DC Universe, Quinn receives her own solo movie with the Cathy Yan-directed Birds of Prey, in theaters February 7, 2020.
The trailers look fun enough, but they have left a lot of fans wondering how and why the motley crew formed, and also the motive behind Ewan McGregor‘s Black Mask.

Featuring Mary Elizabeth Winstead‘s Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell‘s Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco‘s Cassandra Cain, and Rosie Perez‘s Renee Montoya, the first clip is quite the exposition dump that not only brings the crew together, but also tells us why Black Mask is after each and every one of them.
The second offers some insight into Quinn’s own agenda, offering Black Mask help for her life. Here, Black Mask also insults Quinn, implying she’s nothing without her counterpart, Joker.
Lastly, there’s a kind of lackluster action sequence that seemingly takes place in a carnival ride.
