Bits & Pieces: Mike Mignola Talks ‘Hellboy 3’, ‘Kick-Ass’ Box Office Results, And ‘The X-Files’ Goes ’30 Days Of Night’!

I may be dead tired, and my feet might be bleeding from what was C2E2, but that isn’t stopping me from keeping you loyal readers up to date on all the biggest news in the comic book world right now. Inside you can get all the scoop on the biggest little news stories going right now such as Mike Mignola’s thoughts on a third ‘HELLBOY’ film, the disappointing opening weekend for ‘KICK-ASS’, and the dream-team crossover of ’30 DAYS OF NIGHT’ and ‘THE X-FILES’. Read on for all the news.

Mike Mignola Talks “HELLBOY 3”

This past weekend at the C2E2 convention, MTV News sat down with “HELLBOY” creator Mike Mignola to chat about Big Red and the future plans for the character both on the panel and on screen. Mignola said that there have been ‘talks’ regarding the third (and presumably final) installment of the franchise with director Guilermo Del Toro (“THE ORPHANAGE”, “THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE”) , but right now it is still more of an ‘idea’ than a guarantee. Mignola had this to say…

“We did sit down and discuss what the second picture should be, but the third one… [Del Toro] has said at various times that it’s a trilogy, so you’re wrapping it up with that one,” said Mignola. “We’ve talked about it, but we talked about it when we were on the first film, and then on the second film, too. It’s just waiting for him to say he wants to make it.”

“The only thing I would be very careful about is that I don’t want to tell him how I’m ending the series, because I don’t want him to do it before I get to it,” he laughed.

’KICK-ASS’ Does Anything But With Disappointing Box Office Numbers

Friday marked the release date of Plan B and Marv Studios’ adaptation of the Mark Millar created “KICK-ASS”, and it was less than impressive. The film grossed just $19.8 million in its opening weekend, but still managed to beat out Disney’s (but barely) “HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON” which made $19.63 million dollars by comparison. While this would usually equate to a victory for any comic book adaptation whose biggest star is Nicolas Cage (Damn you “GHOST-RIDER”), when taking into account that films make their biggest numbers on their opening weekend, and that the film was estimated to make $30 million over the three days, it is still a bit disheartening.

Sadly this seems to reaffirm the idea among Hollywood heads that comic book adaptations based around lesser known characters cannot hold their own without the aid of A-List actors. “KICK-ASS” only made about half of what “WANTED” grossed on its opening weekend, but when you compare McLovin to Angelina Jolie you can see why. This is sad seeing as how the film is fantastic, and it is possibly the best film of the year (so far) in geekdom. Also, expect the film to make more money overseas in England and The UK due to a far better marketing campaign, and the fact that the beautiful wife of “TURF” scribe Jonathon Ross, Jane Goldman helped pen the script.

DC Comics Plans “30 DAYS OF NIGHT/X-FILES” Crossover

One of the most interesting things to happen at C2E2 as far as the announcements from “The Big Two” go was the planning of a crossover event teaming the Steve Niles created “30 DAYS OF NIGHT” series with cult favorite “THE X-FILES”. The series will be penned by Niles himself alongside TOOL guitarist Adam Jones, and veteran illustrator Tom Mandrake (“THE SPECTRE”) will illustrate. The move will also mark a pairing of “30 DAYS” publisher IDW with “X-FILES” owners DC.

“Two of the most popular horror properties of the last two decades collide in this harrowing 6-issue adventure of epic proportions! Co-writers Steve Niles (writer and co-creator of 30 Days of Night) and rockstar-turned-writer Adam Jones (the band Tool) team with the amazing, moody artistry of Tom Mandrake to unleash the ultimate comic culture crossover! When evidence of a possible cannibal killer in Wainright, Alaska, draws the attention of the FBI, Agents Mulder and Scully draw the less-than-glamorous assignment. But all is not as it seems once the agents are on the ground. Not only has the long seasonal darkness begun to fall, but there’s something unnatural about a few of the locals. And what does a chilling, mysterious black ship have to do with the murders? Find out here! Co-published with IDW.”

“X-FILES/30 DAYS OF NIGHT” Is Slated For A July 14th Release Date.

‘You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive’ – IDW Dark’s Next Horror Comic Will Make You Question Reality

Published

on

Five friends. Four houses. One perfect life. Bloody Disgusting is excited to exclusively announce You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive, a brand new horror comic from IDW Dark.

From Eisner-Nominated writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, and rising horror artist Heather Vaughan, You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive is described as a “paranoia-laced, socially-conscious, horror mystery that will leave you questioning reality, and reveal that this crafted world is more of a nightmare than the idealistic dream they were expecting.”

Phoebe Joplin has never questioned the world her parents built: a secluded community where she and her friends were raised to be smarter, stronger, and better than anyone else. No distractions. No dangers. No secrets. Until the night of their graduation.

When one of them dies under impossible circumstances, Phee starts to pull at the edges of her perfect life—and what she finds is something far more terrifying than she ever imagined.

Because this place isn’t a sanctuary. It’s a cage. And no one who discovers the truth ever leaves it alive.

Collin Kelly & Jackson Lanzing (Batman – One Bad Day: Clayface, Star Trek: The Last Starship) co-write the upcoming IDW Dark horror comic, featuring art by Heather Vaughan.

Jackson Lanzing said in a statement to Bloody Disgusting, “You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive is in many ways a spiritual successor to our last creator-owned horror, The Principles of Necromancy – a dive into the promise and consequence of playing god with the blood of innocents. But the Hivemind book this reminds me of most is Clayface: One Bad Day. This is a deeply human story with intensely raw emotions – five best friends and their five mysterious parents, tearing one another apart for the promise of some impossible glory that’s waiting just beyond their darkest actions. We’re thrilled to be bringing this story to life with our long-time partner in crime, editor Heather Antos, at IDW Dark – and we’re particularly excited to give our Clayface fans a new, brutal and emotional horror made just for them.”

Adds Collin Kelly, “We’re deconstructing a feeling that seems universal these days; our elders have a death grip on their power, without any intention of giving it up to the generations that come next. YNLTPA is about growing up with the limitless potential of the future… and realizing how much it’s a lie we’ve been fed to keep us under the yoke of the past. Bringing this brutal experience to life is our artist and co-creator, Heather Vaughan, who brings an incredible amount of humanity to our cast. But it’s in our youthful leads that Heather’s art really shines – you are going to fall in love with these young people, even as they go through the worst experience of their lives. What we’ve all crafted together is going to be tragic, painful, but above all else, sincere – with a future so uncertain, there’s only one thing we can trust: you’ll never leave this place alive.”

“Some horror stories are about monsters in the dark. YNLTPA is about realizing the monsters raised you,” previews Senior Group Editor Heather Antos. “Working with Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly on this series has been a dream in the darkest possible way. They’ve built a story that’s layered, brutal, and deeply emotional, and every issue gives artist Heather Vaughan opportunities to push the art into places that feel both haunting and deeply personal. Some horror comics will keep you up at night…this is one that will stick with you for years to come.”

The first issue of You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive goes on sale October 14, 2026! Make sure to pre-order at your local comic shop by September to guarantee a copy.
