SXSW ’11: First Images from ‘Silver Bullets’
Hard working indie star Joe Swanberg (who you can see in A Horrible Way to Die) is continuing to persue his directing career with Silver Bullets, his new feature that will premiere this coming March at the SXSW Film Festival.
He’ll be starring alongside Jane Adams, Ti West (The Innkeepers, The House of the Devil, The Roost), Larry Fessenden (Bitter Feast, I Sell the Dead), Kate Lyn Sheil, and Horrible Way to Die co-star Amy Seimetz in a film following an actress and her filmmaker boyfriend experience turbulence in their relationship when she accepts a role in a werewolf film. Her relationship with her new director blossoms while her boyfriend spirals into a dangerous depression.
We’re told that there are barely any horror elements to the film, so be warned in advance. David Harley will speak to Swanberg and get the full lowdown. Until then, check out the first ever stills and long synopsis inside.
“Claire, a beautiful young actress, is in a comfortable relationship with Ethan, a filmmaker who aspires to make meaningful art films. She is his muse and they are finishing a project together. She accepts the lead role in a werewolf film by a talented young horror director named Ben. Ethan is instantly weary of her relationship with Ben and suspects she is more interested in fame than the pursuit or art.
As Clair and Ben prepare the werewolf film together, Ethan begins to spiral into depression and self-doubt. In retaliation against Claire, he casts her best friend, Charlie, also an actress, as his girlfriend in his new film. As both productions move forward, Claire’s life becomes more surreal and starts to resemble the werewolf film she is working on.
Inspired by Chekhov’s “The Seagull,” SILVER BULLETS examines the cinema and asks questions about art, commerce, power and desire. Using David Foster Wallace as a reference point, the film also explores fame, depression and suicide.”
Two-time BAFTA winning filmmaker Joe Wright (Hanna, “Black Mirror“) is set to direct the feature adaptation of post-apocalyptic thriller novel, Juice, Deadline reports today.
Emmy winner Abi Morgan (Shame, “Eric”) will adapt Tim Winton‘s novel for Working Title Films.
In Juice, “A young husband and father is recruited into a top-secret resistance organization, to join the ranks of militia men tasked with targeting the isolated and wealthy culprits responsible for this global catastrophe. When a mission goes wrong, he finds himself on the run, having to fight to the end to survive in this hostile world.”
It’s set in a world ravaged by climate-change disaster.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled that Tim Winton has entrusted us with his extraordinary epic,” Wright told Deadline. “The story is both a thrilling modern family saga and an urgent call to action. I cannot wait for audiences to experience it on the big screen.”
Winton added, “I’m pleased to know a filmmaker of Joe Wright’s calibre has chosen to adapt Juice for the screen. His capacity to portray the turmoil and the turning points of nations and peoples as well as private individuals distinguishes his work as a director and I’m confident that Juice is in good hands.”
Juice was initially published in October 2024 and longlisted for The Climate Fiction Prize 2026.
