[San Diego Comic-Con ’12] ‘Crow’ Director Heads To ‘The Drowning City’
Constantin Film has acquired Joe Golem And The Drowning City, a graphic novel by “Hellboy” creator Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden. Alex Proyas – best known for The Crow, Knowing, Dark City and I, Robot – is set to adapt and direct the live action feature, which will be shot in his native Australia. The book was published in March by St. Martin’s Press and is the second collaboration by Mignola and Golden, who also teamed on Baltimore.
“The title is a supernatural-steampunk illustrated novel that follows an orphaned teenage girl, an aging magician, a lunatic scientist, a Victorian occult detective, and the stalwart sidekick, Joe Golem—a man whose strange dreams hint of a history he has forgotten–as they struggle for the fate of an alternate 1970s lower Manhattan. In this vision, lower Manhattan sank into the water during a catastrophic earthquake in 1925, leaving those unwilling or unable to abandon it to make a new life in streets turned to canals.“
Bram Stoker Award-winning novel The Fisherman from John Langan is getting a film adaptation, and David Lowery (The Green Knight, Mother Mary) will direct for Focus Features.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news this afternoon.
THR details, “Langan’s novel told the story of Abe and Dan, two widowers who bond together with fishing getaways in upstate New York as way to cope with their grief. One day, however, Dan suggests that pair try a new spot, an isolated and mysterious spot named Dutchman’s Creek, which is whispered to allow a person to see their loved ones.
“Even a spooky tale from a man in a diner detailing the terrible history of the creek can’t stop these two men, who eventually find themselves face to face with Der Fisher, aka The Fisherman. They probably should have just stayed home that weekend.”
David Lowery will co-write the film adaptation with Alex Ross Perry. Producers include Michael Bay and Brad Fuller for Platinum Dunes, and Gary Dauberman for Coin Operated.
John Langan’s novel The Fisherman was published back in 2016.
