Review: ‘Hack/Slash’ #23

Published

on

As the countdown of the series’ last issues inevitably continues, Hack/Slash #23 promises lots of twist and turns, while the action heats up. With all the important players gathering, an epic war is about to take place. You definitely don’t want to miss out on the slasher slayers’ last stand.

WRITTEN BY: Tim Seeley
ART BY: Elena Casagrande
PUBLISHER: Image Comics
PRICE: $3.99
RELEASE: January 28th, 2013

In the previous issue, writer Tim Seeley was focused on building the somber atmosphere of grief and mourning. Very little action took place as Seeley built up on the drama, and spent time with his characters expressing their emotions. Because it is now time for nasty revenge, Seeley lets loose on the blood and action. Seeley delivers these intense car chases, as Cassie and Vlad have to stop the two soda trucks driving across the highways. Cassie is dodging bullets while the truck screeches, flips over, and explodes.

One of the scenes that stand out occurs in the opening pages. In the backyard, Vlad is teaching self-defense to Gertrude. During their session, Gertrude mentions she would be better off using a gun than a knife. True to his character, Vlad demonstrates many ways how to disarm a gun with his knife. Though he looks like a hideous freak, Vlad displays how he is a properly trained and skilled fighter.

One of the highlights of Elena Casagrande’s artwork is the major emphasis on clothing. When Vlad enters the War Room, which is a cramped kitchen, Casagrande concentrates on the designs of the women’s apparel, which feels modern and fashionable. In a wide shot, readers are able to distinguish the characters just by their outfits and hairstyles.

All the gore and combat happens midway through the issue. In the action-packed sequences, Cassie has to single-handedly stop the swerving soda truck. First, Cassie has to jump on top of the moving hood. As the action intensifies, Cassie has to get to the steering wheel while being punched at and blocking a hammer being swung at her face.

“Hack/Slash” #23 is an entertaining read for horror buffs. As the “Hack/Slash” series heads towards its grand finale, longtime fans will be anxiously awaiting to see how it will all end for Cassie and Vlad.

‘Curse of the Where Wolf’ Bites Into August Release With Trio of Werewolf Theatrical Screenings [Exclusive Preview]

Curse of the Where Wolf

Larry Chaney‘s hairy misadventures are continuing in the sequel graphic novel Curse of the Where Wolf from creative team Rob SaucedoDebora Lancianese, and Jack Morelli, and its author is celebrating with a trio of horror’s greatest werewolf films.

The Curse of the Where Wolf hits shelves on August 7 from Encyclopocalypse Publications.

That coincides with the launch of a theatrical screening event in Houston, Texas, featuring a trio of seminal werewolf flicks turning 45 this year: The Howling on August 7, Wolfen on August 14, and An American Werewolf in London on August 21.

Each screening features a “werewolf in film” presentation as well as a book signing from Where Wolf author and River Oaks Theatre artistic director Rob Saucedo.

In the new graphic novel, “Being a werewolf sucks. Reporter Larry Chaney wanted to be a hero. Instead, he became a werewolf. Now, caught between incredible new powers and a desire to eat everything (and everyone) in sight, Larry must find a cure for his curse. Or die trying.”

“With Where Wolf, I wanted to tell a whodunit set in a furry convention, so the story was pretty contained within a very specific setting and genre. With Curse of the Where Wolf, I wanted to celebrate everything I love about the possibility of comic books. Curse of the Where Wolf is a funny book, in every sense of the phrase, but it’s also an earnest look at a person’s struggle to become a better version of themselves, especially when the alternative is to become a literal monster,” Saucedo says of Curse.

The original graphic novel was previously serialized as the first webcomic hosted on Fangoria before being collected by Encyclopocalypse Publications in 2023 and has already been optioned for film, podcast, and television development ahead of launch by producers James Fino (“The Freak Brothers” for Tubi, “Rick and Morty” for Adult Swim) and Charles Horak (First Date for Magnolia Pictures).

Expect Larry to find himself in even weirder situations in the 362-page full color sequel; Saucedo has provided Bloody Disgusting with exclusive art pages from the upcoming graphic novel that showcase lupine humor.
